Christopher Davis of Martinsburg, W.Va., took this photo of his 6-year-old daughter, Ellie, during St. Joseph School's annual Father-Daughter dance in March. Davis used his Canon 40D for this technique. He set his camera to bulb and his flash to 2nd curtain sync to get the results that he called "rather unique and took on an abstract quality. In the spirit of the holidays, one reader has expressed a desire to give $500 each to local nonprofit organizations to help people in Washington County. This reader has asked that leaders from local charities write a letter to the editor explaining how the $500 would be used to help people here. The money must be directed toward helping those in need and not redirected into operating budgets. Anyone else who would like to join this reader by donating may call Susan Snyder at The Herald-Mail at 301-791-7375.

HAGERSTOWN -- Shawn K. (Beard) Stout might be 36 years old, but she says when she writes, her inspiration comes from the voice of a 10-year-old in her head. It's a voice she's been listening to for about six years, since she started writing seriously. Stout, a 1991 North Hagerstown High School graduate, recently published her first book, "Fiona Finkelstein, Big-Time Ballerina!!" with elementary school readers in mind. The manuscript was her thesis for a master's degree in fine arts from Vermont College.

When William Shakespeare penned the words "All the world's a stage," he couldn't have known that it would become part of one of the most recognizable passages in literature. This statement comparing the world to a stage begins a monologue in Shakespeare's "As You Like It," a play that was written around 1600. What is it about the statement that endures the test of time? It is framed in a context that speaks to the imagination. When two unlike things are compared as if they were the same, the reader is encouraged to stop and think about what is being said.

About a year ago, The Herald-Mail launched a complete redesign of the newspaper. After months of discussing proposals for new headline fonts, new colors, a new masthead and other revisions, we presented our ideas to several groups of readers. Their feedback helped us shape the final design. We value reader feedback because we want you to be engaged in reading the newspaper. The Lifestyle department is now looking for more reader input to refocus the section to truly fit your life.
