charlestown@herald-mail.com CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Voters in the Jefferson County communities of Bolivar and Ranson will head to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in city elections. In Bolivar, Mayor Tim Collins will face opposition from Ed Hall. Collins, who has been mayor for four years and was on the Bolivar Town Council for four years, said he is seeking re-election because he wants to continue the work he has started. Collins said he wants to work on a stormwater management plan for Bolivar.

RANSON, W.Va. - To remember the past and give direction for the future, nearly 100 people gathered in the basement of a church here Saturday afternoon to celebrate Black History Month. "It's so people can learn about the history," said Victor Carr, a deacon at the Kings Apostle Holiness Church of God - Baltimore Temple, where the event was held. "And for the children, especially. We don't want them to forget where they came from, but we want to let them know where they can go, too," Carr said.

RANSON, W.Va. -A sign posted on a door Sunday at the AB&C Group mailing company in Jefferson County, W.Va., where about 150 people work, said the facility has closed and an employee said it was "quite evident" people had lost their jobs. The sign posted on the AB&C Group building off Fairfax Boulevard read: "AB&C Group is closed until further notice. Employees will be contacted as information becomes available. " LaVern Armel, who has for worked more than 16 years at AB&C Group, said in a telephone interview Sunday night that paychecks were to be distributed Friday afternoon but workers were initially told they were not ready.

RANSON, W.Va. - A local educator and author who was a firefighter in New York during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, will speak during a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the Independent Fire Co. in Ranson on Thursday morning. Frank McCluskey, provost and executive vice president of American Public University in Charles Town, W.Va., is author of "Thoughts on Fire, Life Lessons of a Volunteer Firefighter," according to a news release. McCluskey was a volunteer fire chief in suburban New York on Sept.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A Ranson, W.Va., man was stabbed in the face and beaten with bar stools Sunday night by a group of men during a disturbance at a club along U.S. 340, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Investigators are asking the public for help in apprehending suspects, Lt. Dave Colbert said. The string of incidents began at 8:36 p.m. when a woman in the Tap House dance club adjacent to Shenandoah Lanes bowling alley at Keyes Ferry Road was approached by a man, Colbert said.

RANSON, W.Va. -- A fire early Saturday that ripped through the Southern States store on Mildred Street in Ranson caused about $500,000 in damages, said Ed Smith, chief of the Independent Fire Company. A lightning strike might have caused the fire, Smith said. A West Virginia state fire inspector has been called in to make a conclusive decision. "We feel very confident that's what it is, but we want an investigator to look at it in further detail," Smith said, adding he didn't know when the inquiry would begin.

charlestown@herald-mail.com CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - After accepting three annexation requests Thursday that will allow the city of Ranson to more than triple in size, the Jefferson County Commission called for a stopgap measure to control residential growth in the county. The commission instructed the Jefferson County Planning Commission to change the Land Evaluation Site Assessment scoring process to reduce the amount of development allowed in the county's rural zone, which makes up about 80 percent of the county's land.
