The Clear Spring baseball team may have battled for seven innings, but just needed a split second to win a game on Monday. Pinch runner Ryan Lazich stole home in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Blazers a come-from-behind 9-8 MVAL Antietam victory over Brunswick. “(The steal) was a last-second decision,” Clear Spring coach Mark Shives said. “But I thought the difference today was the character of the team and the way they fought back.” The Blazers (5-5, 4-5)

After some schedule tweaks, two museums in Hagerstown's City Park will be reopened to visitors this weekend. Both the Hager House and the Railroad Museum will open for the season on Saturday, city Recreation Coordinator Andy Hoffman said. “We're super excited that we're opening up, and summer is right around the corner,” Hoffman said. The museums will have regular hours every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments can be made throughout the rest of the week.

North Hagerstown's midfield play was dominant, but Leah Peterson was superior. Peterson had six goals and an assist on Tuesday - matching her totals from North's season-opening victory - in a 14-5 drubbing of Brunswick. Peterson scored four times in the first half, half of the eight goals the Hubs (2-0) scored before intermission. Maddie Palkovitz added two of her three goals, including one assisted by Peterson, while Deanna Brunner and Kayla Peterson each scored once. “Our midfield play was outstanding tonight,” said North Hagerstown coach Katie Eck. “We have a few girls with standout potential, but this was a team effort.

After 18 straight wins, South Hagerstown boys basketball coach Kevin Naylor was in the mood to divulge a little known fact about the Rebels. “Our best games are yet to come,” he said. That's kind of scary. South was pretty darn good Friday in its 70-47 victory over Brunswick in its MVAL Antietam finale. Even while starting all seniors instead of the normal lineup, South (18-2, 14-0) controlled Brunswick. The seniors were good, but the regular starters were devastating.

Brunswick started quickly and never looked back on Wednesday en route to a 48-34 victory over Boonsboro. Brunswick's Zack Spriggs pinned Louis Minoglio in a minute flat at 152 pounds in the opening bout of the match to give the Railroaders a 6-0 lead they never relinquished. Boonsboro (9-11) got on the board at 160 as Davon Clark scored a major decision over Jacob Heaton before Brunswick (9-5) took control by winning the next three matches. “We've had some discipline problem with some of the kids and we weren't a full team tonight,” Brunswick coach Scott Tilles said.

The Brunswick girls basketball team went on a roll to open the second half, but by the middle of the fourth quarter, the Railroaders were toast. Boonsboro exploded for 42 second-half points - behind the hot shooting of Ashlyn Hawbaker and Kim Seabright - on Tuesday to collect a 60-43 MVAL Antietam victory. Trailing by three at the half, the Railroaders (4-10, 4-6) reeled off six straight points to claim a 21-18 advantage, but it was all Boonsboro after that. Hawbaker and Seabright scored five points each in the last six minutes of the third period as the Warriors (10-9, 7-6)

The City of Hagerstown's Parks and Recreation Department is going through some changes, and officials say the goal is to provide more interactive activities for people locally. The recreation department is planning to have six adult sports leagues this spring, but the operating details of other attractions, such as the historic Jonathan Hager House and Railroad Museum at City Park are still being ironed out, newly hired Recreation Services Coordinator Andy Hoffman said last week. Hoffman said the recreation department will host leagues for outdoor basketball, kickball, dodgeball, four-man flag football, Ultimate Frisbee and touch football, starting with kickball on March 12. Sign-up dates have not yet been decided, he said, but games will be held in the various parks around the city.

The North Hagerstown boys basketball team played like a tire with a slow leak. The Hubs inflated the score and then flattened out to let Brunswick back in the game until they found a patch. Andrew Yacyk was that patch. Yacyk plugged the hole in the middle of the floor with aggressiveness and rebounding to all North to eliminate the leak Tuesday for an 65-49 MVAL Antietam victory. Yacyk was North's constant, while the rest of the Hubs made key cameo appearances to turn back the Railroaders (8-7, 5-4)
