The Franklin County District Attorney has filed a notice that will give him the option to pursue the death penalty in the case against a Waynesboro, Pa., man charged with fatally shooting his wife and two other people in July. District Attorney Matt Fogal said Friday during a press conference in the Franklin County Courthouse annex that the filing of the notice of aggravating circumstances will allow his office - if it chooses - to request at a later time to seek the death penalty for Kevin M. Cleeves.

An incumbent Quincy Township (Pa.) Supervisor appears to have held onto his seat in a tight race during Tuesday's primary election. Robert “Bob” Gunder garnered 286 votes from Republicans, compared to 264 votes for challenger Edward “Ed” Wilson, according to unofficial results from all four of the municipality's precincts reporting. Write-in votes on the Democrats' side will be tallied in coming days. If made official, Gunder will appear on ballots as the GOP candidate in the Nov. 5 municipal election.

A 3-year-old girl was killed and a 4-year-old boy sustained major injuries when two vehicles collided Thursday afternoon on Wayne Avenue in Quincy Township, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police said. The names of the children were not provided in a state police news release that was issued Friday morning. Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said Friday afternoon that the girl died of her injuries at Chambersburg Hospital, but he was not prepared to release her name. Two other people, Kessa N. Wagaman, 20, of Rouzerville, Pa., and Rose M. Biddinger, 56, of Waynesboro, Pa., were taken to Chambersburg Hospital with moderate injuries, according to the release.

Quincy Village used a hot air balloon Monday morning to symbolically launch a new initiative designed to help residents with what is being called successful aging. The “masterpiece living” program focuses on physical, spiritual, intellectual and social needs. “It enhances life. It makes you appreciate stuff that much more,” said Russell Schwartz, who moved into Quincy Village's independent living area three and a half years ago. He and his wife, Judy, trained in the masterpiece living program last fall to help introduce it to other residents in the retirement community.

A man accused of fatally shooting three people in Quincy Township, Pa., and fleeing the state with his daughter in July pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the criminal charges filed in his case. Kevin M. Cleeves, 35, appeared before Franklin County (Pa.) Court of Common Pleas Judge Shawn Meyers for mandatory arraignment. Cleeves said little as his public defender indicated the defendant would plead not guilty on all counts. Cleeves is charged with three counts of criminal homicide, kidnapping of a minor, unlawful restraint of a minor, two counts of illegal possession of a firearm, interference with custody and endangering the welfare of a child.

Politicians and business leaders gathered off Mentzer Gap Road on Monday to cut a ribbon at the future site of Heritage Park, the first municipal park in Quincy Township, Pa. Crews will be converting an existing storage building into a concession stand, upgrading a softball field and starting an exercise trail. Their efforts mark the first phase of a six-phase project that could someday be a nearly 14-acre park. “With everyone working together, good things happen,” said U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., who spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

A police dog has found traces of accelerant in the debris of a Quincy Township, Pa., home destroyed by fire earlier this week. “He alerted in several sports for ignitable liquids,” said Jeff Sarver, a Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal. On Wednesday, Sarver said investigators packaged several samples to send to a crime lab for testing. Firefighters were called at about 1:22 a.m. Monday to a blaze at 9456 Masters Road in the Gap area. Initial reports indicated a person might be trapped inside the ranch-style house, but fire officials said that person was actually away from the property.

Inclement weather took a toll on some parts of the 78th annual Quincy Ox Roast weekend, but organizers said the overall outcome for the four-day event was positive. Poor weather affected turnout Saturday, but Sunday proved to be much better, cook Donny Gossert said. “I never heard a complaint,” he said Monday.
