Four wrestlers from North Hagerstown and South Hagerstown qualified for the Maryland Class 4A-3A state tournament during the second day of the West regional tournament Saturday. Amont Hawkins (182 pounds) and Gene Balcita (138) finished third in their weight classes for the Hubs. Hawkins defeated Matt Roberts of Sherwood 9-1 in the first round of the consolation bracket and Byron Johnson of Northwest 10-2 in the second round before pinning James Kalavritinos in 5:34 to take third.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 PREP ICE HOCKEY Northstars off to 2-0 start FREDERICK, Md. - Travis Biggs scored four goals as the Washington County Northstars trounced Poolesville-Quince Orchard 11-1 on Tuesday. Drew Brooks netted a hat trick, Shawn Kreps scored two goals and Savon Ambush and Brad Alvarez scored a goal apiece for Washington County. Jeremy Benda had 16 saves for the Northstars (2-0). They play at home on Sunday against Montgomery-Blair.

andrewm@herald-mail.com The lightweights may have captured most of the weekend attention at the 16th annual Hub Cup Invitational at North Hagerstown, but, like all good wrestling matches, it all came down to the heavyweights. Just ask Walkersville coach Bryan Biehl. He sent four wrestlers to the finals Saturday, yet may have rooted the hardest during the night's last final at 277 pounds. And none of his athletes were even competing. Clinging to a two-point lead over Quince Orchard in the team standings heading into the 277 championship bout, Walkersville needed a win from Middletown heavyweight Andrew Presnell against Quince Orchard's Raffi Mnatzakanian to hang on for the team crown.

Group 3 First place - Frankfort High School Second place - Middletown High School Third place - James Buchanan High School Special awards for Groups 1 and 3 Best music - South Hagerstown Best percussion - South Hagerstown Best effect - Frankfort Best march and maneuvering - Middletown Best guard - Frankfort Group 4 First place - Nazareth Area High School Second place - Quince Orchard High School Third place - Dulaney High School Special awards for Group 4 Nazareth took all the special awards, which consisted of best music, best effect, best percussion, best guard and best marching and maneuvering.

The Saint James boys basketball program has its new head coach, and he comes from a school with a national background. After 11 years as an assistant coach at Montrose Christian, Dan Prete is ready to once again guide his own program. Saints athletic director Jim Fahey announced that Prete, 43, was his choice from a pool of applicants to succeed Paul Easton, who resigned following two years. “We are super excited to get a coach of his caliber,” Fahey said. “He comes highly recommended.
