CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Handing out ribbons to winners and runners-up for everything from livestock judging to pie-baking and pie-eating contests is keeping 2010 Jefferson County Fair Queen Kendall Vesper busy this week. But her responsibilities don't end there. She has other duties that can be a little less sophisticated. The fair queen is expected to compete in such events as the pudding-eating, watermelon-eating and ice cream-eating contests, the milk-drinking competition and the hay bale toss.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Stephanie Hykes was named the 2010 Franklin County Fair Queen on Monday night. Hykes, 21, of Greencastle, Pa., will reign over the county fair, which runs through Saturday, and serve as the face of the Franklin County Fair for the next year. Hykes also will compete for the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen crown in January in Hershey, Pa. The candidates were evaluated by a three-judge panel. The evaluation criteria included a private interview, 300-word essay, impromptu question, personal appearance and poise, and a three- to five-minute speech on the theme, "Why I Think County Fairs are Important to Pennsylvania.

MARTINSBURG, W.VA. -- Allyson Bayer's 8-month-old Boer goat was the ticket that led to the Musselman High School student being crowned this weekend as the 51st Berkeley County Youth Fair Queen. Bayer, 17, a member of Valley Star 4-H Club, entered Goat to be eligible for the fair queen contest. She also entered 4-H cooking and leadership categories. This is the fourth year Bayer entered the competition. She was crowned over 18 other contestants. "I was very surprised," she said, adding that she thought the judges selected her because they thought she would make a positive impact during her year's reign.

JULY 3, 1952-NOV. 3, 2009 KEEDYSVILLE - Mrs. Niki Marie Queen-Rhoderick, 57, of Keedysville, Md., went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009. She was the loving wife of Phil Rhoderick. Niki was born in Washington, D.C., on July 3, 1952. She grew up in Rockville, Md., where she attended St. Jude's Catholic School and Perry High School. She was a graduate of the University of Maryland. Niki was an early childhood teacher at Washington County Schools. Niki loved the Lord and served him through all that she accomplished.

St. Maria Goretti High School celebrated homecoming weekend Oct. 9 and 10. The 2009 Homecoming Court was introduced during halftime of the varsity boys soccer game, and the king and queen were announced. Hunter Buterbaugh of Fairfield, Pa., was named the 2009 homecoming king, and Sarah Swope of Frederick, Md., was named the 2009 homecoming queen. The 2008 King and Queen, Will Murray and Maggie Espiridion, both from Hagerstown, came home from college to attend the festivities and crown this year's king and queen.

WILLIAMSPORT -- Proclamations were read, pictures were snapped, and accolades and laughter flowed as Williamsport residents honored the oldest person in town Wednesday night. The tribute to 104-year-old Ida Grimes also came in style. Grimes arrived at the band shell in Byron Memorial Park in a long, white limousine and was led to a red, wingback chair at the front of a crowd that numbered more than 100 people. People gathered around Grimes, delivering a sash and flowers to her. "You want me to stand up?"

Signore, 20, will be the face of the fair this week and promote it for the next 12 months, following her crowning on Monday. Signore competed with nine other young women for the title. "It was overwhelming," Signore said. Signore served as the Franklin County Dairy Princess for 2006-07.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Sarah Signore, 20, of Greencastle, Pa., was named 2009 Franklin County Fair Queen on Monday night. During the contest, Signore completed an interview with judges, read a prepared essay and answered two impromptu questions. Lindsay Upperman, 16, of Chambersburg, Pa., was named first runner-up. While the judges deliberated, contestants entertained the crowd with dancing, talent displays and jokes.

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -- Mandi Lynch's family and friends crowded the stage seeking hugs and well wishes minutes after she was crowned Fulton County (Pa.) Fair Queen on Sunday. In the crowd was Mandi's cousin, Carrie Swope, who won the title in 2006 and encouraged Mandi to compete. The girls talked about the benefits of representing the county at various events throughout the year. "It's a great experience just to get up here," Mandi said while still perched on the stage's edge.
