MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - About $25,000 worth of smoke damage was caused to the Market House Grill restaurant Sunday when a grease fire broke out at about 10:30 a.m., said a Martinsburg Fire Department spokesman. The fire started on a grill, said Capt. David Brining. Although firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, there was smoke damage throughout the restaurant, Brining said. It will cost about $25,000 to clean the restaurant and make possible other needed repairs such as painting, Brining said.

martinsburg@herald-mail.com MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - With her long blond hair, outgoing personality and perfect smile, Casey McDonald seems like she would be a natural for pageants. She doesn't think so. "I just never thought I'd go any higher (than fourth runner-up). I'm not very girlie. I'm a country girl," said McDonald, 18, of Martinsburg, who was crowned the Miss Berkeley County Youth Fair queen after a two-hour program Monday evening. McDonald finished as the contest's fourth runner-up last year.

Most counties have a fire prevention queen who advocates fire safety and typically attends the Maryland State Firemen's Association convention every year to compete for the state Miss Fire Prevention title. Washington County did not have a fire prevention queen for a long time, according to Dale Fishack, a member of the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. The local association, which organizes the program, felt it was important to have an ambassador for fire safety, Fishack said.

HAGERSTOWN If you asked him Wednesday, James McCleaf would have said he was less than optimistic about the chances of a dry Alsatia Mummers Parade this year. But the Alsatia Club's president and chairman said his concerns about the weather vanished Saturday morning as the clouds that brought rain to the area for the last few days gave way to bright, sunny skies. "I'd say this year, we got pretty lucky," McCleaf said. Potomac Street was lined with chairs by Saturday at 11 a.m. as people marked their spots for the city's Halloween parade.

By E.T. MOORE MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Walking through the doors of the Red Wolf Grill brought back some old memories for me as expected. But once inside, my companions and I began to create some new memories of an upscale restaurant trying very hard to please. For the most part, the owners and staff succeeded in pleasing us as we were seated comfortably in what used to be a bank I frequented with my mother when I was a child. The crisp black and white decor blended nicely with the marble walls and pillars left over from the previous incarnation.
