Mary Jo Ashburn is retired now, but she still remembers the day one of her students in the Washington, D.C., school system came in with her arm bandaged. When Ashburn asked what happened, she said the child told her that she had fallen down the stairs. Ashburn suspected otherwise, but in those days, she said, there weren't many places to turn for help. Fortunately, she said, officers of the D.C. Police Department came to see her. There are still many people who don't know where to turn when they suspect child abuse, but Ashburn and the Exchange Club's Mid-Atlantic Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse want to change that.

The Hagerstown Rotary Club distributed $72,305 to 39 local nonprofit organizations during a ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the Four Points Sheraton. One of those nonprofits, the Safe Place Advocacy Center, will use its $3,000 share of the money to buy digital recording equipment to help prosecute child abusers, said Teresa Thorn, the center's program manager. Children are interviewed when they come to the center, Thorn said. Those interviews will be recorded on the new equipment and turned over to prosecutors to help establish a case.

MARTINSBURG, W.VA. - Dorothy Roman said she thought a program linking existing and aspiring entrepreneurs would be a great project for the Mission Outpost Bookstore Inc., which is just completing its first year of existence. Roman was right on target. When the doors of the Chris May Memorial Gymnasium opened Saturday morning on the campus of Faith Christian Academy, people were flocking to the first Multicultural Business Expo. "We have workshops to empower people and teach them the ABCs of starting a business," Roman said.
