Week of Sept. 21, 1953 Two 13-year-old youths - Gerald N. Barnhart, 1550 Jefferson Heights, and John Urner, 629 Preston Road - were issued hunting licenses this week. Our inquiry yielded the information that a license will be issued to anyone regardless of age except that lads under 14 need the consent of parents or guardians. Also, the law makes no distinction as to sex and a girl can get a license as well as a boy. Mrs. Marshall Woodcock of Hopewell has noted the strange behavior of her Dominique hen. Either the hen is trying to imitate a rooster or she may be changing sex. The hen crows like a rooster and flaps its wings just like one. Otherwise, she looks like the female of her species and lays eggs every day. There was frost on the pumpkins in Washington County early today just as the Hagerstown Almanac said there would be. The forecast by the Almanac, made a year in advance, hit the nail on the head: "September 22, 23, 24 and 25: Fair and frosty.

"In the Wednesday, Dec. 28, edition of The Daily Mail I read that Washington County Public Schools cashiers have removed food entrees from students trays and replaced it with a sandwich. How demoralizing and embarrassing for the children. Some of these children may have self-esteem issues without being labeled as 'poor' or 'disadvantaged.' By labeling these children, you have made them a target for harassment by others. Its amazing, a multimillion-dollar Washington County High School stadium can be built, but no money exits to ensure a few children receive a decent meal.
