My friend Mark and I are Old School. We believe in the value of earning an honest dollar, provided we don't have to work for it. So it's been increasingly difficult for us, two guys who are keenly tuned to the global financial Nets, to watch guys who are even younger and dumber than we are tapping into the worldwide wealth through limp-skulled ideas for exploiting the new, electronic economy. So it was with no small amount of interest that I opened the following e-mail from Mark the other day. He had hit upon a plan: Ever walked out of a movie theater after the late show and seen how they throw out garbage bags full of unsold popcorn?

o City Center Holiday Showcase 2009 HAGERSTOWN -- The cheerful notes of Christmas songs and the smell of fresh popcorn wafted through the air Thursday afternoon in Hagerstown's Public Square. Musical theater students from the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts performed for about an hour while parishioners from Otterbein United Methodist Church passed out bags of freshly-popped popcorn. The celebration kicked off Hagerstown's City Center Holiday Showcase, with special events planned through Sunday.

martinsburg@herald-mail.com SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - White-painted bricks are the palette for an interesting film experience in Shepherdstown. With the town's Opera House no longer showing movies, the best way now to catch a flick is to bring a lawn chair and a penchant for a warm summer night. Over the next few weeks, three family-friendly movies will be projected onto the back of the Shepherdstown Public Library. Admission and popcorn are free. "It's just really fun. I think it's a really nice town feeling," said Bonnie Sitman, treasurer of Friends of the Shepherdstown Library, or FOSL.

"You're not going to throw that away are you?" My 8-year-old son was gazing intently at the cardboard tissue box cube I had in my hand. "Well, yes. It's empty, so I'm putting it in the trash can. " His shoulders sagged in disappointment. "But Mom, I could make something from that. " Not wanting to stifle his creativity, I handed it over. And so it goes in our household. I tie up the kitchen trash when my son is in another room so he's not tempted to stake a claim on the packaging from dinner.
