marlob@herald-mail.com In many ways, April 26 was a night like any other for the members of the Hagerstown City Police Street Crimes Unit. Around 10 p.m., that all changed for Hagerstown Police officer Johnny Murray. "As we were moving in to make an arrest on West North Avenue near Park Place, I heard the sound of someone screaming for help," Murray said. Within seconds, Murray saw a man standing in front of 411 Park Place ... holding a phone in his hand and screaming. Murray then encountered Karen Bean as she came running out of the home holding a small child.

A new downtown Hagerstown police substation could open in May or June, City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman said Tuesday. The City Council on Tuesday voted 4-0 to approve a lease for 49-51 N. Potomac St., which is across the street from City Hall. The building, which is vacant, would serve as a home base for the five officers assigned to cover the downtown, Police Chief Arthur Smith has said. The Western Maryland Police Academy, now at police headquarters on Burhans Boulevard, would move into the downtown building.

A Montgomery Village, Md., man has been charged with punching a Hagerstown woman whom he was dating while she was his parole and probation agent. Jesus Delvalle, 25, of 9507 Tippet Lane, was charged March 16 with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and theft of less than $500. He was being held at Washington County Detention Center Wednesday on $100,000 bond. In charging documents filed with Washington County District Court, police said Hagerstown City Police officers went to the Fairview Road home of Lyndsay Jean Nave twice on March 16 in connection with a dispute she was having with a male friend.

A man who reached into the cash register at Byers Stop-N-Go and took about $80 late Monday didn't get very far, Hagerstown City Police said. Shortly after 10 p.m., police got a number of telephone calls informing them that citizens had apprehended a man shortly after he left the store at 152 N. Burhans Blvd., and were holding him. With police headquarters in the next block, officers arrived quickly and took the man into custody, police said. Sgt. Dave Long said Nicholas James Covell, 20, of Mitchell Avenue, was charged with strong-arm robbery.

Potomac St., which is across the street from City Hall. The building, which is vacant, would serve as a home base for the five officers assigned to cover the downtown. Robbery suspects apprehended By MARLO BARNHART marlob@herald-mail.com and KIM YAKOWSKI kimy@herald-mail.com HAGERSTOWN - The man wanted in Thursday's early morning armed robbery of a Dual Highway convenience store was apprehended without incident shortly after 7 p.m. in the first block of North Prospect Street. Randy Lynn Hawks, 31, of 126 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, had been the object of an all-day search by Hagerstown City Police and the Street Crimes Unit, said Lt. Rick Johnson.

Parents praised by county judge By MARLO BARNHART marlob@herald-mail.com The parents of a South Hagerstown High School student who turned their son into the authorities for stealing a school computer last year were praised Wednesday in Washington County Juvenile Court. "I know it was difficult but you parents did the right thing," said Judge Don Beachley. The teen was found guilty of one count of felony theft and detained overnight. On Thursday - the boy's 18th birthday - Beachley brought the boy and his parents back into court and allowed him to go home on community detention to await disposition in the theft case.

Police log in March 13 Morning Herald Pizza delivery man assaulted in West End A pizza delivery man was assaulted while making a delivery in Hagerstown's West End Monday evening, Hagerstown City Police said. Police said a male Pizza Hut driver was run off the road by a man in a blue car around 7:30 or 8 p.m. near Lanvale Street. The delivery man and the man got out of their cars and began fighting, police said. The delivery man told police that during the fight, the other man yelled to a passenger in his car to get a gun. At that point, the delivery man ran back to his car and drove away.

Police stop car; find loaded handgun Following up on a disturbance call in the 1000 block of Lanvale Street early Wednesday, Hagerstown City Police stopped a car and found a loaded handgun under the front seat. Officers arrived on Lanvale shortly after 3 a.m. and people began to disperse, police said. Officer Doug Garner got a tip about handguns and a description of a vehicle that might contain weapons, police said. That description was put out to all officers. Officer Brad Helman spotted the vehicle and pulled it over in the 400 block of West Antietam Street at 3:34 a.m., police said.

A parrot that was swiped from a Hagerstown pet store Tuesday evening was returned to its owner Wednesday morning, squawking but apparently in good health. cont. from front page "Maybe we should start calling him Lucky," said Ken Muller, owner of the Pet Connection in the Ames Plaza, as he reclaimed the previously unnamed African Congo gray parrot at Hagerstown City Police headquarters. Police said a man went to police headquarters at 7 a.m. Wednesday with the bird, valued at $1,700.
