HAGERSTOWN -- As Vinnie DiCola stood outside the charred remains of Rocky's University New York Pizza in downtown Hagerstown, he said he was amazed by the outpouring of public support. It was early Sunday that DiCola narrowly escaped from a fire that seriously damaged his business and the upstairs apartment in which he lived on Public Square in Hagerstown. "It's pretty rough," DiCola said. "I was hoping to get up and go to work this morning. I'm just happy to be alive. " While DiCola dealt with insurance adjusters Tuesday, his friends set up a collection box and sold sandwiches in front of the business to help pay for DiCola's expenses.

I attended my high school reunion in New Jersey a couple of weeks ago. How many years? Gulp. Forty. Yes, I am old. I'm still smiling about reconnecting with people I knew so long ago. I feel good that my choice of friends has been validated four decades later. I hung out with good, caring, smart and funny - oh, so funny - people during those four years. We've had a few other gatherings, but this one was casual: pizza and beverages at a riverside community center.

HAGERSTOWN -- On the corner of Wilson Boulevard and Maryland Avenue in Hagerstown is a house with rose bushes out front and a somewhat unusual parking lot around back, but no one has lived in the house for nearly a decade. Yet, Peggy Corsi still refers to that house's basement as home, because for 46 years, she has owned Corsi's Pizza Parlour, which operates there. But on June 29, Corsi's will close its doors. Customers, some of whom have been eating there since it opened, will have to stock up on jars of sauce this week if they ever want to taste it again.
