The cost of one-half chicken and roll and butter, pit beef or fried country ham sandwich is $5; meals, including one-half chicken with roll and butter or sandwich, macaroni salad and baked beans is $6. Takeout is available.

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Fire Co.'s $2,500 bonanza will be today. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6 p.m. The menu includes pit beef, baked beans, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, desserts and beverages. Fire company plans pit beef, chicken sale FUNKSTOWN - The Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. will host a pit beef sandwich and barbecue chicken sale from 9:30 a.m. to sellout on Saturday, July 26. The sale will be held at the rear of the fire station. Proceeds will benefit the department. The price of half a chicken or sandwich is $4, or $5 for a meal that includes coleslaw and firehouse beans. The fire company asks residents for their support. Legion hosts singles dances twice a month FUNKSTOWN - One 2 One singles dances are held on the first and third Fridays of every month in the ballroom of Funkstown American Legion Post 211, 12 N. Westside Ave. Music is provided by D.V.K.

WOLFSVILLE - The annual Garfield United Methodist Church picnic will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Fertile Soil from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and by Down Home Gospel from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Food items will include pit beef, country ham sandwiches, steamers, hot dogs, homemade soups and ice cream. There also will be baked goods and a white elephant table. The picnic area is on Garfield Road at the intersection with Brandenburg Hollow Road.

Maryland Fur Trappers invites the public to its annual convention in Fairplay on Aug. 19 and 20. Some of the activities will be: Friday, Aug. 19, starting a 6 p.m. - Steamed crab feast, bluegrass music by the Steven's Family and visit from Miss Maryland. Saturday, Aug. 20, starting at 7 a.m. - Breakfast, trapping demonstrations, live auction, trap supply dealers; food and drinks all day, serving pit beef, ham and barbecue chicken It will be at Tilghmanton Ruritan Park in Fairplay, five miles south of Hagerstown off Sharpsburg Pike.

Can you feel that lovely breeze? I am enjoying the change in temperature.  The heat wave did not keep the wave of troops from filling Funkstown with blue and gray over the weekend as the Battle of Funkstown took place.  I did not envy those men and women in their hot, wool uniforms battling in the streets and on the hillside of the park. The encampments were lively and authentic, and the re-enactors were tenacious in their enthusiasm for living history. Volleyball clinic for girls planned Before you know it, it will be time to grab the backpacks and head out to the bus stop.
