More than 130 people attended a picnic hosted Sunday afternoon by congressional candidate John Delaney at Fairgrounds Park. Delaney, a Democrat, is running against Roscoe G. Bartlett, the Republican incumbent for the 6th Congressional District. Among those supporting Delaney was U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, also a Democrat, who said he stopped at the picnic on his way to Cumberland, Md., for the Heritage Days Festival. “We all know how terrible the unemployment numbers are in this country and we're all very concerned about the trends,” Delaney told the crowd.

No matter what is going on in someone's life, one six-letter word has the power to bring it all crashing down. Or at least it might seem like it. That word is “cancer.” “It can be pretty intense,” said Dr. Dan Cornell, director of radiation oncology at John R. Marsh Cancer Center. “Obviously, coming down with cancer can be a very difficult thing to deal with.” But the most important things when dealing with cancer, according to a pair of local survivors, is to act quickly, remember that you are not alone and always focus on the positives.

The Boonsboro High School Class of 1966 held its 46th class reunion picnic May 19 in Shafer Park in Boonsboro. The reunion drew 25 class members, plus their guests. The class plans to hold a picnic on an annual basis. Potomac Heights Elementary School in Hagerstown welcomed approximately 300 people to its back-to-school picnic Sept. 12. Those attending included students, parents, grandparents, siblings, school staff and other guests. The theme for the picnic was anti-bullying, featuring a presentation by school counselor Beth Hofmann, and an anti-bullying song led by music teacher Laura Baker and performed by students in grades three through five. Food and drinks were provided for all who attended.

The Washington County Recreation Department will host a 1-mile youth cross-country run Saturday at Washington County Regional Park near Black Rock Golf Course. Participants may sign up individually and will not associate with a school or area. All registered participants will receive a ribbon. Check-in and registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. on the day of the race. The race will begin at 9 a.m. Call the weather hotline at 240-313-2811 for program cancellations on the day of the event.

The Clear Spring High School Class of 1961 recently celebrated its 50th reunion with a weekend of events that included a Friday evening presentation from the class of $3,619.61 to the high school scholarship fund at the annual Alumni Association Banquet, an event that has been ongoing for 36 years. On Saturday the group enjoyed a picnic lunch and tour at Plumb Grove and an evening dinner at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive in Hagerstown. The first two events were held in Clear Spring.

When the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks occurred, the Interfaith Coalition of Washington County was started to help people cope with the tragedies. “A lot of people had questions about what (was) going on,” said Ed Poling, coordinator of the coalition. After the attacks, the coalition held a forum at Hagerstown Community College and people at the gathering wanted to know more about Islam, said Poling, recalling that about 300 people attended the event. The group has been holding forums and other events ever since, focusing on various issues like church and state, women in religion and the afterlife, he said.
