Two people had to be rescued Sunday night when their pickup truck was swept away in Sideling Hill Creek off Rizer Road, Allegany County Emergency officials said. The Allegany County Swift Water Rescue Team freed Sam and Rena Turner, of Little Orleans, and their dog from the pickup, according to a press release from the Allegany County Bureau of Police. The Turners tried to drive across the creek at a typically passable area at about 8:30 p.m., when their pickup was swept away by rapidly moving water, officials said.

A Ford pickup truck spun out of control and hit the guardrail on the right side of the ramp from Sharpsburg Pike onto eastbound Interstate 70 Thursday morning, Trooper W. Talbert of the Maryland State Police said. Nobody was injured, according to Talbert. Police responded to the accident at 8:14 a.m. and blocked off the ramp upon arriving on the scene. The Maryland State Police and a firetruck from the Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. were on the scene. The road reopened at 8:45 a.m. after the pickup truck was towed away and police cleared the scene.

The driver of a pickup truck was taken to Meritus Medical Center after his vehicle was struck by a freight train in the 700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown Thursday afternoon. George Fuscsick, 87, of Hagerstown was treated and later released at from the hospital following the 1:52 p.m. collision at the intersection of North Prospect Street, near a railroad crossing, authorities said. Fuscsick failed to stop for flashing red lights at the railroad crossing, according to a Hagerstown Police Department news release.

A two-vehicle collision Friday morning in Mercersburg also resulted in damage to one of the drivers’ homes, according to a news release from Pennsylvania State Police. A Ford pickup was heading west on Garnes Road and stopped at the intersection with Pa. 75 before turning right — north — onto Pa. 75, police said. After the pickup turned right, it was hit by a 2002 Ford F-350 pickup truck that was going north on Pa. 75, police said. The Ford that was hit went across the double yellow center line, across the southbound lane, through a private lawn, struck a mailbox and then hit the driver’s house, police said.

A Smithsburg man who was struck by a pickup truck Sunday in the parking lot of the Food Lion supermarket on Jefferson Boulevard has died, Maryland State Police said Tuesday. George Bargmann, 58, of Smithsburg, died Tuesday at Meritus Medical Center, Maryland State Police Cpl. P.A. Martin said. The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m., when Bargmann was struck by a Ford pickup as he was walking in the Food Lion parking lot at 22401 Jefferson Blvd., according to a state police news release.

BURKITTSVILLE, Md. - Two men escaped serious injury Saturday when a small plane crashed into a vehicle near this Frederick County town. A 1971 Grumman Ag-Cat biplane loaded with seed and piloted by George Folk, 54, of Martinsburg, W.Va., was taking off from a dirt road at about 1 p.m. when the plane struck a pickup truck driven by Malcolm Genuse, 46, of Burkittsville, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Department. Genuse was traveling the opposite direction of the plane on property at 4524 Burkittsville Rd., police said.

Just before 8 p.m. Wednesday, a sedan and a pickup truck collided at the intersection of Halfway and Massey boulevards at the entrance to the Valley Mall, tying up traffic and sending a number of people to Washington County Hospital. The driver of the 1989 Pontiac was Daniel Phillips, 18, of State Line, Pa., who was westbound on Halfway Boulevard making a left turn into the mall when his vehicle was hit by an eastbound pickup truck, said Washington County Sheriff's Deputy 1st Class Tracy Peyton The impact pushed the car into a pole, causing a backseat passenger to be partially ejected from the car, Peyton said.

WAYNESBORO, PA. - A 93-year-old Waynesboro man killed Tuesday while crossing South Potomac Street became the second pedestrian fatality in the borough in eight months. Joseph J. Stewart, of Foulger Street, crossed from the west side of the street and into the path of a 1998 Ford pickup truck driven by Robert L. Walker, of North Garfield Street Extended, at 9:50 p.m., Waynesboro police said. Stewart, who was crossing near Gay Street and not in a crosswalk, was pronounced dead at the scene.

HANCOCK -- A spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of the Environment said Thursday afternoon a submerged pickup truck was pulled from Licking Creek on June 29, a day before the discovery of a fish kill near Slabtown Road. "This is circumstantial evidence, but it is probable that the fish kill was associated with this event, i.e. leaking gasoline," MDE spokeswoman Dawn Stoltzfus wrote in an e-mail Thursday. Maryland State Police Sgt. S.D. Wallace said her agency got involved in the incident June 1 when Joshua D. Burtner, 19, of 1543 Broadfording Road in Clear Spring, reported his pickup truck stolen.

waynesboro@herald-mail.com tarar@herald-mail.com Two people were killed and another was seriously injured Thursday night when a pickup truck ran off Pa. 16 east of Waynesboro, crossed the parking lot of the Mountain Gate Family Restaurant, struck a woman in the lot and then slammed into the restaurant, police said. The names of the victims were withheld pending notification of next of kin, said Kenneth Peiffer, a deputy Franklin County coroner. The victims, the woman in the parking lot believed to be in her 20s to 30, and the male driver of the pickup, were pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Ted Reed.
