HERSHEY, Pa. - If Chambersburg senior Irvin Sleighter doesn't beat a team with his arm, he can just as easily do it with his bat.Monday, he pummeled Hempfield from every direction as the Trojans knocked off the Black Knights 4-1 in the PIAA Class AAA baseball state semifinals. Sleighter (11-0) scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out 11 and walking one. He also had two hits and three RBI. "Irvin pitched very well, as he usually does," said Bob Thomas, who's in his 40th season as Chambersburg coach.

PREP BASEBALL COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Irv Sleighter pitched a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went 2-for-4 with three RBI as Chambersburg beat defending PIAA Class AAA state champ West Chester East 9-2 in the first round of the state playoffs Monday at Ursinus College. "Sleighter (10-0) pitched well again," Chambersburg coach Bob Thomas said. "He didn't have as good a fastball as he usually has, but he pitched a good game. You can't complain. " The Trojans (22-4)

PREP WRESTLING HERSHEY, Pa. - Waynesboro's Brian Lisko won his second-round consolation match over Penn-Trafford's Tom Picarsic 2-1 at the PIAA state championships Friday to stay alive. Lisko is the only area wrestler competing in the state championships. BOYS BASKETBALL St. Joseph's 60, S. Fulton 47 JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Brock Flowers had 15 points, but it wasn't enough as Southern Fulton fell to St. Joseph's in the first round of the PIAA Class A State Playoffs.

I have a habit of ranking things. From football teams and cross country runners to concerts and restaurants, there's a top-10 list somewhere in the back of my head. Not long before I left my sportswriting job at The Record Herald in Waynesboro a few years ago, I wrote a column ranking my top-three sports memories while on the local beat. Coming in at No. 2 was the complete-game one-hitter hurled by Waynesboro junior Ryan Devlin against Montoursville in the 2000 PIAA state quarterfinals, as the Indians scratched out a 1-0 victory.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The Greencastle-Antrim girls basketball team is sick of distractions. Instead, it is becoming one for everyone else. Despite the absence of leading scorer Megan Williams and a crushing defeat off the court over the weekend, No. 5 Greencastle shook off a midgame rally by No. 8 Waynesboro Tuesday night to bury the Maidens, 47-37. cont. from sports page "This team ... that's just the kind of kids they are," Greencastle coach Doug Stuart said afterward.

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Chen Wen Hsien drove in four runs, Lee Chih Ming tossed a five-hitter and Chinese Taipei made the most of only three hits en route to a 5-2 victory over Hagerstown in the first game of the Pony League World Series. Chen, who had two of Chinese Taipei's three hits, broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning off losing pitcher Derek Haines. Lee protected the two-run lead by scatterting five Hagerstown hits, including a double and single by Frank McAllister.
