PetSmart Inc.'s decision announced Friday to build a large distribution center in Hunter's Green Business Center adds to the steady stream of development in the Hopewell Valley area. PetSmart, one of the nation's leading suppliers of pet food and other products, announced it plans to open a 252,000-square-foot distribution facility by mid-August and employ 100 people within three years. The jobs will pay about $9 an hour, which local economic development officials noted is higher than the county's per capita income.

tarar@herald-mail.com HAGERSTOWN - CoCo, Patch and Cinnamon stood, sat, wagged their tails and often looked up at customers as they walked by at PETsMART on Friday. Just down the aisle, four of five cats sprawled out in their own cages, calmly turned their heads and eyed up any movement in the aisle. The fifth cat, a yellow kitten named Julius, playfully swatted his paws at nearly anything close by. The dogs and cats were just some of those at the Humane Society of Washington County in need of permanent homes.

Schroeder, spokesman for Ohio-based Developers Diversified Realty Corp., said Tuesday. The shopping center, at the intersection of Interstate 81 and U.S. 40, is fully leased, Schroeder said. It will contain more than 40 stores and restaurants, including Wal-Mart Super Center, Home Depot, Borders Books and Music, Pier 1 Imports, Circuit City and PetSMart.

Thumbs up to all those who organize, support and attend events honoring the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Tri-State-area residents do a nice job keeping alive the memory of King's work through services, banquets, scholarships and song.  Thumbs up to PetSmart in Hagerstown for hosting the Hounds of Prison Education (HOPE) program last weekend. The program connects medium-security inmates with dogs in need of homes and eventually connects the dogs with adoptive families.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Rashaun Hann entered PetSmart on Monday with a shopping list already cemented in her mind. Her first stop was the aisle full of dog clothing, so she could get her beagle mix, Mikey, a coat to help stop his wintertime shivering. Next she grabbed a pirate Halloween costume on her way to the harnesses in various sizes and colors. Rashaun, 16, of Fort Loudon, Pa., needed no assistance making decisions on her Make-A-Wish shopping spree. A volunteer said "it's your day" and gave Rashaun control of the experience.

martinsburg@herald-mail.com A Berkeley County animal rescue shelter is looking for a new home so it can continue to save dogs and cats from death and abandonment. Second Chance Rescue in Pine Ridge Estates subdivision in Inwood, W.Va., has four months to relocate, according to an injunction halting its services handed down by a 23rd District Circuit Court Judge in May. Circuit Court Judge Christopher Wilkes found the shelter in violation of a homeowner's covenant that prohibits a commercial business in a residential area, said attorney James Crawford of Crawford & Associates, who represents Bert and Annie Napolitano, homeowners who live near the shelter.

PetSmart presented a check for $10,000 to Star Community on Monday as part of a new initiative that empowers the company's district managers and distribution centers to award up to $5,000 to nonprofit groups that enrich peoples' lives through pets, according to a Star Community news release. The $10,000 donation came from the local PetSmart distribution center on Hunters Green Parkway, as well as from 23 PetSmart stores and 100 associates in Western and northern Maryland, said Charlie Keller, operations manager for the local distribution center.

The Humane Society of Washington County is partnering with PetSmart Charities to participate in its National Adoption Weekend Friday through Sunday. “We are thrilled to participate in this important adoption event and are thankful to have such wonderful partners in the community.” said Mike Lausen, executive director of the animal shelter  “Through our collaboration with PetSmart Charities, we are able to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals in Washington County.” The shelter will receive $35 for every shelter pet adopted during the event, a contribution increase of more than 50 percent.

Leah Ellis is a Girl Scout with a quest. As a member of Girl Scout Troop 226, she wants to earn her Bronze Award before summer ends. On July 24, she took another step toward earning that award when she completed a community project and donated the product of her hard work to Humane Society of Washington County Executive Director Paul Miller.  Carrying numerous bags filled with aluminum cans, old cell phones and copy cartridges, Leah and her mother, Sheryl, delivered the items to the shelter.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- PetSmart is inviting Martinsburg-area pet owners to its grand opening celebration Saturday at The Commons shopping center off Apple Harvest Drive near Martinsburg. "It's an event for the whole family," company spokeswoman Jessica Douglas said Tuesday. "Not many places offer pet invitations, too. " The 20,346-square-foot store will employ 25 to 30 full- and part-time employees, Douglas said. Doors open at 9 a.m. Saturday and the store will be giving away gift cards and store products as part of a weekend celebration.

The Humane Society of Washington County recently received a $10,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to increase its number of spay/neuter operations by 20 percent. The Humane Society's 6-year-old pet sterilization program has spayed or neutered more than 600 animals per year to fight the area's pet overpopulation problem. The program is available to county residents who currently are receiving government financial assistance. It offers free spay/neuter services and pain medication, rabies vaccinations and county dog licenses.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - One hundred and one years after F. Hayes Harmon delivered furniture to his first customers with a horse-drawn freight wagon, Harmon's Furniture still is in the family, but in a new store. The store at 480 Gateway Ave. in the new Gateway Center actually is the fifth location since Harmon started the business in 1906, said Robin Harmon, the great-granddaughter of the founder. For the past 36 years, until the new store opened in late January, Harmon's was a fixture on North Main Street in downtown Chambersburg.
