Corey Ketterman might just be the Cutest Vegetarian Alive. The 15-year-old Martinsburg resident is one of 10 finalists in the Cutest Vegetarian Alive contest, which is sponsored by peta2, the youth division of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The Cutest Vegetarian Alive contest is a spin-off of PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Alive Contest. "We think compassion is really cute, and we want to spotlight it," said Rachel Owen, PETA's assistant manager of Youth Campaigns.

Miss Maryland Carlie Colella wouldn’t say Thursday whether she intended to keep the fox fur coat she was given for winning the state pageant or if she would donate it to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ anti-fur campaign, as PETA requested. “At this point, I don’t have anything that I can say to that,” Colella said Thursday. On Wednesday, PETA announced it had sent a letter to Colella, asking her to donate the fur, and another letter to the pageant’s executive director, asking her to pledge not to have fur prizes at future pageants.

It's the sportspersons who pay up for wildlife To the editor: There is just no end to the ignorance of some minority groups who want to impart their narrow-minded misconceptions on the rest of society. Surely citizens, paying trillions of taxpayer dollars, fund a major portion of wildlife and habitat. Wrong! What's the old adage? Don't confuse me with facts, because I already made up my mind! A recent report was completed that detailed the economic impact of fishing and hunting.

The Maryland Board of Public Works has awarded to a Frederick company a $3.9 million contract to build the new Washington County District Court, Gov. Parris N. Glendening announced Wednesday. The contract went to Waynesboro Construction Co. Inc., the lowest of six bidders. Construction on the two-story building is expected to begin this spring and finish by October 2000, according to a news release from the governor's office. The new 27,240-square-foot court building will be at West Antietam and South Potomac streets.

Police: Tractor-trailer hits bank, flees scene CLEAR SPRING - A tractor-trailer struck M&T Bank at 121 S. Mill St. in Clear Spring shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. After striking the bank, the driver of the tractor-trailer fled the scene and continued to drive on Interstate 70, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies. The driver was stopped in Big Pool about 10 p.m. by deputies when he was attempting to merge back onto I-70, police said.

For many, late November is associated with Thanksgiving, eating large quantities of food, especially turkey. Children in school make the paper turkeys to act as center pieces for the Thanksgiving table and parents bring home the great frozen turkey to be lavished over on Thanksgiving. But what about those of us who have given up the almighty turkey? In recent years, the number of vegetarians and vegans has grown. For those who are unaware, vegetarians are people who don't eat meat.
