Pennsylvania State Police said Thursday they are investigating a fire that caused about $2,500 damage to a porch that was under construction at a house in the 500 block of Feaster Road. A contractor discovered the fire damage when the worker returned to the house in Guilford Township on Thursday, state police said. It is believed the fire occurred between 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. Thursday, police said. The fire was not burning when the contractor went to the house Thursday, police said.

An all-terrain vehicle was stolen during a burglary in the 4100 block of Guilford Springs Road Tuesday morning, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The ATV was described as a black 2007 Suzuki Eiger Quadrunner, state police said in a news release. The burglary in Guilford Township occurred about 9 a.m., state police said. Anyone with information about the burglary can call state police at 717-264-5161.

Chambersburg man charged in connection with burglary SCOTLAND, Pa. - A Fayetteville, Pa., resident had his wife and two children lock themselves in an upstairs bedroom during a burglary Monday morning at 148 W. Main St., according to Pennsylvania State Police. The resident who police did not name armed himself with a gun during the robbery, which occurred about 3 a.m., state police said. Thomas David Strode, 41, of Chambersburg, Pa., later was charged with burglary, trespassing, reckless endangerment, harassment and disorderly conduct in connection with the burglary, state police said.

A former police officer and fire chief fatally shot his wife and wounded his stepson Tuesday evening before killing himself in a home east of Waynesboro, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police said Wednesday. John Fleagle, 50, fatally shot his wife, Cathy, and himself with a handgun, police said in a news release. Fleagle also shot his stepson, 18-year-old Mitchell Robinson, in the arm, police said. No information was available regarding his condition. Law enforcement authorities said they were called to a home at 13878 Mar Penn Ave. near the intersection with Edgewood Drive shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Police Investigate strong-arm robbery Hagerstown police were investigating a strong-arm robbery Friday night near the intersection of High and George streets. Officers went to the area at 10:35 p.m., where the victim said she was attacked by a man who choked her and stole her purse, according to a Hagerstown Police Department news release. The victim sustained minor injuries and did not seek medical care, police said. The man last was seen running west on George Street, police said.

Pennsylvania State Police said they have charged a Guilford Township, Pa., man with using a vehicle to strike another man on Sunday in Franklin County. Eugene Barlow, 67, of Guilford Township, was charged with aggravated assault, according to a state police news release. Troopers said Joel Gorman, 31, was struck by a vehicle in the 8700 block of Peiper Road in Southampton Township at 8:56 p.m. Sunday. Barlow was taken to the Franklin County Jail, according to the release.

Lew Thomas used part of his Christmas morning to help a neighboring family have a nicer holiday. Thomas, a Fayetteville, Pa., resident, was one of close to 100 drivers who took hot, freshly prepared turkey dinners Tuesday morning from The Salvation Army in Chambersburg, Pa., and delivered them to shut-ins and less-fortunate people all across Franklin County. Thomas said it was his first time volunteering as a driver for the event. He said the family to whom he took meals lives in a schoolhouse in the Duffield, Pa., area, with “eight or nine” disabled children, many requiring extensive care.

Pennsylvania State Police were looking Monday for a man who is believed to have led troopers on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash Sunday morning. Police said the 26-year-old McConnellsburg man being sought had not been found by Monday morning, a trooper said Monday. The pursuit began in McConnellsburg at 2:13 a.m. Sunday when a trooper tried to stop a green Pontiac Grand Am. The driver did not stop and drove south on U.S. 522 at speeds of more that 115 mph, police said.

One of the two men who died Friday after a head-on crash in Chambersburg, Pa., was a media specialist at Western Heights Middle School, Western Heights Principal Michael Kuhaneck confirmed Sunday. Dean Schroeder was the media specialist at the middle school in Hagerstown's West End, Kuhaneck said. “He was a great guy, loved kids. He worked very hard,” Kuhaneck said Sunday morning. “He did everything. He ran the (student) morning announcement crew for the school,” Kuhaneck said.

Police said a Saturday night pursuit of a motorist that started on South Mountain Road in Quincy Township ended when the vehicle struck a utility pole near Dixon Road. The incident began when police noticed the vehicle traveling erratically at about 11:50 p.m., Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the motorist did not comply, police said. A pursuit of the vehicle started on South Mountain Road near a National Guard facility, police said.
