Monday, November 5, 2012 GIRLS SOCCER Boonsboro's Cronise earns all-state honorable mention Boonsboro senior defender Emily Cronise was the only Washington County girls player selected for the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer all-state team. She was an honorable mention. Cronise helped lead the county-champion Warriors to an 8-4-4 season, which included 10 shutouts. COLLEGE WRESTLING Burrs one of three Mont Alto champs VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - North Hagerstown graduate Kenneth Burrs was one of three Penn State Mont Alto freshmen who won titles at Virginia Beach Nationals over the weekend.

The Waynesboro Borough Council on Wednesday morning hired a new police chief, whose first day on the job will be Sept. 15. Jim Sourbier will take the helm of the Waynesboro Police Department at a starting salary of $61,000 per year. He is police services supervisor at Penn State University's campus in Mont Alto, Pa. “It's the opportunity to work in the municipal police venue again, and to continue to develop and build the department to serve the community,” said Sourbier, who lives in the Greencastle, Pa., area.

chambersburg@herald-mail.com MONT ALTO, Pa. - He never coached a game there, but Wednesday night was John Benchoff's night at the Multipurpose Activities Center of Penn State Mont Alto. Benchoff, who coached the men's basketball team for 22 years before his death in 1993, was honored during a ceremony between the women's and men's games and two students were recognized as the inaugural recipients of the John Benchoff Scholar-Athlete Awards. "About two weeks before he died, he was present for the dedication," said daughter Paige Benchoff, one of seven family members present for the ceremony, including his 3-month-old great-grandson King Unique Benchoff-Byrd.

One Franklin County, Pa., municipality will be getting flashing lights to protect pedestrians, while another continues to wait for state reimbursement years after installing a set of lights. The Borough of Waynesboro will soon buy materials needed to install sets of flashing lights at pedestrian crosswalks. The $87,900 project will place the lights at the intersections of Sunnyside Avenue and East Main Street, Fairview Avenue and West Main Street, South Potomac and Gay streets, and South Potomac and West Second streets.

waynesboro@herald-mail.com Edna Miller grew up on a farm, graduated from high school in 1977 and went to work in a garment factory for the next 22 years. "I decided one day that I'd had enough of factory work," she said, explaining why she's working on an associate's degree in business administration at Penn State Mont Alto. Miller, single and a Shippensburg, Pa., resident, was 41 when she started classes in the fall of 1999. She graduates this month and already has a job lined up as a teller with a local credit union that she said "could lead to a possible management position.

BELISLE Staff Writer, Waynesboro MONT ALTO, Pa. - Penn State Mont Alto kicked off its 1997 academic year Wednesday with a bunch of firsts, including its first four-year degree program, first Founders Convocation and a brand new president. David Goldenberg was hired as the 11th chief executive officer to head the college since it opened in 1903. It started out as the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy on a 19,000-acre plot owned by the Mont Alto Iron Company.

MONT ALTO, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania State Forest Academy opened more than 100 years ago. Now known as Penn State Mont Alto, the campus still is embracing its forestry roots. Mont Alto held Fall Fest & Forestry Day on Saturday, bringing a mix of woodsmen, families and young adults -- though some fell into all three groups -- to the campus to help raise funds for student organizations. "Fall Fest is a tradition that goes way back -- I don't know how many years," said Kim Hoover, interim associate director of student affairs.

The "Spend a Summer Day" event at Mont Alto was designed to introduce prospective 2008 students to the small campus, as well as provide broader information about the 20-campus Penn State University system. This was new for most of the students, but some of the parents are veterans. "It's still as exciting with number five as it is with number one," said Sue Shetter of Waynesboro, Pa., who has gone through the process with four other children and stepchildren.
