The Meadows of Hagerstown's annual 1950s-style “Cool Your Paws” fundraiser on Aug. 20 raised more than $250 for the Humane Society of Washington County. Adoptable shelter dog Acorn attended the event and showed off his training. “This year's event was a huge success,” said Connie Illig, co-owner of The Meadows. “Attendance was the best ever with our donation to the HSWC more than doubling that of last year. And a special thanks to Pet-O-Bed for their donation.” The annual event took place at The Meadows Original Frozen Custard of Hagerstown in the South Pointe Shopping Center, and featured guests with pet-related products and services, including Marley's Gourmet Treats, McMillion Pet Photography, Off the Leash caricature paintings, Pet-O-Bed specially designed beds, Dog-Gone Groomin's mobile van, Monster Hollow Studio sculptures, Certified Professional Dog Trainer Karol Kennedy and music by DogFoot Acoustics.

The Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter and the American Cancer Society are teaming up on Saturday for the second annual "Paws for a Cure" dog walk. The dog walk will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the future site of the animal shelter, 5051 W. Letterkenny Road in Chambersburg. Last year's event raised more than $2,000 that was divided between the two organizations, according to a spokesperson from the CVAS. Event organizers said the goal of the event is to raise money for two worthwhile causes.

Hancock used a consistent rotation that got every player on the score sheet in the Panthers’ 74-15 rout of Paw Paw Friday. “We got all the kids in tonight, which is what we wanted to do,” Hancock coach Todd Ruppenthal said. “I was really pleased with how everyone played tonight.” Maureen Leavy paced Hancock (6-10) with a double-double, scoring 20 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Sara Wagner added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Lyndsay Himes scored 10 points with eight rebounds.

Tuesday, February 8, 2011 BOYS BASKETBALL HANCOCK — Five Panthers scored in double figures as Hancock jumped out to a 26-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back in a 79-55 win over Paw Paw on Tuesday night. Logan Ray led the way with a team-high 14 points, while Spencer Heller had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds and added four blocks for Hancock (5-12). Jarrod McCoy had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, Eli Souders had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Jamie Martin added 11 points.

Four dog owners and their eight dogs put their best paws forward in 11 titling efforts at Peaceable Paws Dog and Puppy Training in Fairplay on Jan. 22. Eight titles were awarded — six Good Manners Dog titles and two Scent Dog titles, as follows: Barb Flook of Woodbine, Md., with her 6-year-old border collie, Norm, earned their Peaceable Paws Good Manners Dog-I (PPGMD-I) and Scent Dog-I (PPSD-I) titles. The third annual Bark in the Park was held Saturday at Doub's Woods Park in Hagerstown. Proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of Washington County. The even included a blessing of the animals, followed by a Paws on the Path walk around the park. There were also games, vendors and demonstrations.

It's the season of giving and David Drawbaugh, 13, wants to make sure that includes everyone, even those with fur and four legs. David recently made a donation of various pet items to the Humane Society of Washington County collected during his "Santa Paws" project. David was inspired to collect items after seeing a commercial on television depicting homeless pets. "I felt really bad for them and thought that they deserved more. They're alone at the holidays and I wanted to make them happy by giving them their own Christmas gifts," David said.

The second annual Bark in the Park on Sept. 19 at Doub's Woods Park raised more than $4,300 for the Humane Society of Washington County. The event began with a blessing of the animals by Pastor Jerry Lowans of St. Matthews and Washington Square United Methodist churches in Hagerstown and continued with a Paws on the Path walk around the park and games and demonstrations. The master of ceremony was Pieter Bickford from NBC 25. The judges for the games and contests were Nikki Burdine and Angelique Gonzales of NBC 25; Cindy Jackson, executive director of Leadership Washington County; Nicole Houser, shelter board of directors; and Karol Kennedy shelter board of directors and owner/personal trainer, B-PWSITV: Training for Pups and Their People.
