FUNKSTOWN - Funkstown officials nearly double-booked themselves Monday night, when they discussed their annual invitation to participate in the Smithsburg Pride Days parade on July 17. Councilwoman Sharon Chirgott reminded Mayor Robert L. Kline and fellow council members the parade would conflict with the annual Battle of Funkstown event's Saturday morning street skirmish.

WILLIAMSPORT -- The Williamsport Christmas parade will be Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., said Teresa Cheppo, a clerk at Town Hall. There was some discussion among town officials about moving the parade to a Saturday to alleviate traffic concerns and because more people are expected to be in town on Saturday, but the parade will remain on Friday this year. The parade will go from near the water tower at Sunset Avenue and Conococheague Street, up Potomac Street to Byron Memorial Park.

Ravens Roost No. 7 of Hagerstown recently won a trophy. Its entry into the Ravens Roost Parade took third place in the theme division. The parade was May 30 in Ocean City, Md. The van is a 1977 Chevy Sport Van wrapped in a Ravens theme. The van is owned by Tom Moser and Matt Livelsberger. Moser, originally from Hagerstown, lives in Fayetteville, Pa. Livelsberger, who once lived in Smithsburg, now lives in Frederick, Md.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A 37-year-old Greencastle tradition, the annual Halloween parade, may not be held this year unless some local organization steps forward to take it over. [cont. from front page ] A disagreement between the local VFW club and the Greencastle Mayor and Borough Council over the time of the parade and its route arose last month and was not resolved Tuesday night when the two groups met. Dale Sheller, parade chairman for the VFW, said the veterans organization decided to drop its sponsorship after nearly 4 decades because it could not accept the council's insistence that the date and route be changed.

HANCOCK -- It all began with an idea that Charlie Hudson saw in a children's magazine: A Fourth of July bike parade. Charlie is the son of Judy and Dennis Hudson, the owners of the C&O Bike Shop in Hancock. In a small town with limited resources that has been trying to weather a bad economy, the "simple things are the best," and that proved correct on the Fourth of July. More than 20 children -- infants to 12 years old -- gathered in front of the bicycle shop in Hancock to decorate their bikes in red, white, and blue streamers, small American flags and flowers.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. -- The wreaths have been hanging in Waynesboro for days. The Chambersburg Community Theatre has nearly completed its run of "Miracle of 34th Street. " The shops of Greencastle are starting to stay open late for Heritage Christmas. Yet for Franklin County, it was not officially the holiday season until the parades came to town Saturday. Three parades in one day has been a Franklin County tradition for years, starting in Greencastle in the morning, passing through Waynesboro in the afternoon and ending in Chambersburg in the evening.

Washington County Free Library's Bookmobile will participate in the Parade of Bookmobiles at the American Library Association's annual convention in Washington D.C., from June 21-27. Bookmobiles from around the nation will be taking part in the parade as they travel from the Convention Center to the Bookmobile Rally in Franklin Park on Tuesday, June 26. The Parade of Bookmobiles and Bookmobile Rally activities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Franklin Square area, between Eye and K streets and between 13th and 14th streets, NW. The current Washington County Free Library Bookmobile went into service in March 2004.

By CLYDE FORD Staff Writer, Charles Town CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The floats were modest but the spirits of those on them were high Thursday night for the first-ever Jefferson High School Homecoming Parade. The parade was open to all of the schools in Jefferson County and the clubs at the high school. Elementary school children in Halloween costumes rode on the back of pickup trucks or flatbed trailers, waving and smiling. Jefferson High football players piled into a haywagon barked out cheers, responding to the team captains in the truck pulling them.

Memorial Day is a holiday that honors Americans who gave their lives in the service of their country. Many communities carry the tributes through the weekend. The 137th Sharpsburg Memorial Day parade will be Saturday, May 29. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. in the town square. Fred Otto, executive director of the Washington County Commission on Aging, will speak.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A parade through downtown to honor the Class AAA state champion Martinsburg High School boys basketball team Thursday evening has been canceled due to rain, school officials announced. A celebration honoring the team will be held as scheduled, beginning at 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium. It will include recognition of the MHS basketball team and coaching staff, presentation of the team, as well as public comments and questions about the road to the 2009 state championship.
