waynesboro@herald-mail.com GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Food Lion LLC, which will close 41 of its 1,241 grocery stores, has laid off 16 employees in its warehouse in Greencastle, a company spokesman said Tuesday. None of the 41 stores targeted for closure are in the Tri-State area, said Jeff Lowrance, corporate communications manager at Food Lion's corporate offices in Salisbury, N.C. The stores will be closed by the end of the month. Closings will cost the jobs of 1,500 full- and part-time workers in 10 states, about 100 workers in the company's seven distribution centers, including the 16 in Greencastle.

The bride is the daughter of William and Dagmar Yount of Hagerstown. The bridegroom is the son of Joseph Byler of Belleville, Pa., and Sharon Bailey of Milroy, Pa. The bride is a 1998 graduate of Grace Academy. She attended Elim Institute in Lima, N.Y., from 1998 to 1999 and received an associate's degree in paralegal studies from Hagerstown Business College in 2001.

Finniff-Myers Tisha Lynn Myers and Douglas Scott Finniff were married Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown. The bride is the daughter of David and Pamela Myers of Hagerstown. The bridegroom is the son of Jack and Joyce Finniff of Hagerstown. The bride is a 1990 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and a 1994 graduate of Roanoke College with a bachelor of arts degree in art communications. She is employed as a supervisor of graphic design and scheduling at the Close Up Foundation, a civic education foundation, in Alexandria, Va. The bridegroom is a 1987 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and a 1992 graduate of University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in business management.

CHARLES TOWN, W.VA. - Four Maryland residents were arrested on drug charges Thursday after Charles Town police allege they participated in the trade of firearms for crack cocaine, according to a press release. The Charles Town Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives began investigating Torray James Sr., aka "Ray Ray," in November 2006 after a confidential police informant alleged James discussed buying and selling crack cocaine, according to the release.

As they picked up cigarette butts and pulled weeds in their neighborhood on Saturday, Jonathan Street-area residents hoped their actions would help clean up their community in a different way as well. Carolyn W. Brooks, who helped organize the spring cleanup, said a visible presence by area residents deters the drug dealers who often control the street corners. "If we're busy in the streets, they're not going to be hanging out," said Brooks, coordinator of Hagerstown's HotSpot program.

Two ransack house, rob man CLEAR SPRING - Two men ransacked a house on Funkhouser Road and stole a loaded gun Sunday afternoon, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department. James Turner, 68, was at home west of Clear Spring at about 3:45 p.m. when two men knocked on his door and asked if he had a truck for sale, deputies said. When he walked outside, the men put a pillow case over his head, deputies said. Turner was dragged back inside and the house was ransacked.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man who gunned down a 22-year-old man outside Berkeley Garden Apartments last April gave a brief explanation Tuesday as he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Brandon R. Hodges, 18, told Berkeley County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Wilkes that he believed a third person was armed when he shot Kevin Smith on April 7. "I pulled a gun on him. This other guy was reaching for the gun and I shot several times," he said. In exchange for his guilty plea, the charge of first-degree murder was dropped.

Five face false document charges MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Five people have been charged federally with possessing false documents, U.S. Attorney Sharon L. Potter's office said Thursday. The five were charged with possession of false identification documents, possession of false alien registration receipt cards and possession of false Social Security numbers. The five people are: · Valentin Ramirez Paniagua, 28 · Manuel Chavez Hernandez, 34 · Jose Alonso Paniagua Hernandez, 22 · Guadalupe Mendez Delacruz, 26 · Froilan Garcia Martinez, 29 Their addresses were not given.

McDonald, Wildcats make run at 2A/1A title By ADELINE STAEBLER / Staff Correspondent WESTMINSTER, Md. - Williamsport heavyweight Ryan McDonald kept his pin streak alive through the quarterfinals of the 2A/1A state finals Friday night at Western Maryland College. He isn't too worried about keeping it through today's rounds ... He just wants to win states. McDonald pinned Edgewood's Javance Payne in the first round and then pinned Glenelg's Robert Lahayne in the quarterfinals in 3:33 for his eighth straight pin to advance to today's semifinals.

FREDERICK, Md. - During last year's trip to the Class 4A semifinals, the Frederick girls basketball team took its big suitcase with it - plenty of room for cameras and souvenirs and other things to take home. Today, the Cadets will be hauling the economy-size luggage to their 3 p.m. matchup with Arundel at the UMBC Fieldhouse, because this is just a business trip. "We're not going just for fun this time," said sophomore guard Kristal Hood said. "We're going to win," senior forward Laura Jobe said.
