HAGERSTOWN -- Simon Property Group said Tuesday it is buying the Prime Outlets shopping centers as part of a transaction valued at about $2.33 billion. Prime Outlets Acquisition Co., a subsidiary of The Lightstone Group of Lakewood, N.J., a real estate company, currently owns Prime Retail. Simon said in a news release it will pay Prime Outlets Acquisition Co. about $700 million for Prime Outlets -- 80 percent in cash and 20 percent in Simon common operating partnership units.

A driver was taken to Washington County Hospital Friday afternoon after experiencing a diabetic emergency and crashing at Prime Outlets at Hagerstown, Maryland State Police said. The crash happened at about 1:47 p.m., a police dispatcher said. The vehicle crashed near the site of the future Columbia Sportswear Co. store. No one else was injured in the crash, the dispatcher said.

Prime Outlets at Hagerstown has announced the addition of three new stores and an eatery. o Oriental Rugs and More opened a 3,000-square-foot location next to Carter's KidsWear in April. o Jr.'s Steakery opened in the outlet center's food court June 16. o Book Warehouse is open in a 3,000-square-foot store next to Alfred Dunner. o Hot Stepper, an urban wear store, is expected open in early July. The 485,796-square-foot outlet center along Sharpsburg Pike features more than 100 brand-name retailers such as COACH, kate spade, Lucky Brand Jeans, Calvin Klein and Polo Ralph Lauren.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Maryland's tourism office let a lease for a temporary welcome center at Prime Outlets at Hagerstown expire, despite delays in building a permanent $18 million center off Interstate 70. The state started renting space at the outlet center in May 2008 while the welcome center in Myersville, Md., was closed as part of a replacement project. When the one-year lease expired at the end of May, the Maryland Office of Tourism vacated the Prime Outlets storefront.
