SEPT. 8, 1912-JULY 6, 2009 HAMILTON, Ohio - Joyce Knauff, 96, of Hamilton, Ohio, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, at Butler County Care Facility. Born Sept. 8, 1912, in Brownsville, Md., she was the daughter of Syrom and Gertrude (Kaetzel) Spitzer. Joyce was married to Lloyd A. Knauff until his death on March 15, 1975. She was self-employed in the antique business and was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Joyce leaves behind her daughters, Mollie Sue Davis and Kay Liggett; grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

NOV. 29, 1918-JUNE 13, 2009 Dorothy Schwemler Gilkey, 90, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village in Boonsboro. Born Nov. 29, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Lillian Wilk Schwemler. Dorothy graduated from high school in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and attended Kent State University. She was a beloved children's librarian in both Elyria, Ohio, and in Prince George's County, Md. She also worked as an escort in Colonial Williamsburg.

NOV. 13, 1928-MARCH 31, 2009 SILVER SPRING, Md. - Dr. G. Richard Minnick of Silver Spring, Md., born Nov. 13, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, died March 31, 2009, in Silver Spring. Survivors include: Norma L. Minnick, wife; his son and wife, Dr. Thomas H. Downs and Donna L. Lucia-Downs of Centreville, Md.; his sister, Virginia M. Hutchinson of Fairfield, Ohio; and grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins. Services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

APRIL 17, 1926-MARCH 30, 2009 Ullnee Marie "Mickey" Place Whaley, Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully in her home the morning of March 30, 2009. Born April 17, 1926, in Washington County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Earl Franklin and Helen Fern Nolan Place. She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church; a member of Naomi Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of Galion, Ohio; and Alpha Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Hagerstown. She and her husband of 59 years owned and operated the Dual Highway Dairy Queen from 1952 until their retirement in 1986.

FEB. 14, 1914-FEB. 10, 2009 Charles "Mac" E. McKnight, 94, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at his home. Born Feb. 14, 1914, in Breathedsville, Md., he was the son of the late Elmer and Caroline Lewis McKnight. He is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Sowers of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Patricia Haag of Columbus, Ohio; one son, Steven McKnight of Columbus; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard McKnight and Clyde McKnight.

Born Jan. 30, 1929, in Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Nelly Parshall. She attended and graduated from high school in Ohio. She was a homemaker. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Barklow, Kathy Kelly and Kimberly Shoop; three sons Calvin R. Shirley Jr., Craig Shirley and Cary Shirley; four sisters, Emily, Gloria, Carol and Grace; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Born Aug. 3, 1944, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Lester T. Kerns and Edna R. Johnson Kerns. She attended Pilgrim Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two daughters, Tammy L. Czaplicki of East Lake, Ohio, and Christinia R. Zepp of Jefferson, Ohio; one son, Sebastian T. Zepp of Cleveland; three grandchildren; and one cousin.

-JAN. 11, 2009 MUNROE FALLS, Ohio - Albert A. Shackelford, 97, of Munroe Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009. He is survived by two sisters, Lilly Grayson and Laura Stockslager, both of Sharpsburg; two sons; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Redmon Funeral Home in Stow, Ohio. Pastor Doug Shackelford, his grandson, will officiate. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born July 26, 1925, in Kokomo, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Harry Otis Nickelson and Helen Marie Peacock Nickelson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Knapp. She worked as a nursing assistant in the Mansfield, Ohio, area. She was a member of Gallilean Baptist Church in Shepherdstown, W.Va. She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn P. Smith of Bunker Hill, W.Va.
