JUNE 27, 1931-SEPT. 18, 2009 Robert Llewelyn "Bob" Whittington Sr., 78, of Hagerstown, Md., died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at home with his family. Born June 27, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Llewelyn Whittington of Hagerstown and the late Ethel McLucas Whittington. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired in 1993 from Eastalco Aluminum Company in Frederick, Md., with 17 years of service. He was previously employed with Brandt Cabinet Works.

SMITHSBURG -- In 2008, the title of Miss Washington County Fire Prevention was bestowed on Jennifer Barciz, ending a drought of at least 20 years the county had been without such a representative. Barciz has further distinguished herself and the county she represents by winning first runner-up at the Maryland Firemen's Convention in Ocean City in June. "I have been traveling a lot already in my capacity as first runner-up," Barciz said. "I have put in 3,500 miles since June.

The Silver Starlettes majorette group attended the Maryland State Fireman's Association parade in Ocean City, Md., in June where it came home with first place honors for Best Appearing Majorettes. The group is under the direction of Rocky Willis.

JAN. 19, 1927-AUG. 20, 2009 HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- Charles H. Young, 82, of Hedgesville, W.Va., passed away Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va. Born Jan. 19, 1927, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles C. Young and Nellie Crumbine Young. He lived in Hedgesville for the past five years. His wife of 52 years, Theresia M. (Busey) Young, preceded him in death June 30, 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Lesa Selders, and her husband, Darren Selders, of Hedgesville.

SEPT. 29, 1931-AUG. 14, 2009 FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Bessie Marie Tress, 77, of 72 Chariot Lane in Falling Waters, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md. Born Sept. 29, 1931, in Clover District, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Ovie Potts Helmick. She was a graduate of the West Virginia School for the Deaf in Romney, W.Va. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Donald E. Tress of Falling Waters; two daughters, Brenda L. Tress-Mowl and her husband, Gary, of Fishers, Ind., and Janet Tress of Falling Waters; three grandchildren, Amelia Mowl, Anthony Mowl and Jon Mowl; one sister, Martha Mayne of Ocean City, Md.; and one niece and one nephew, Marian and Roger Moore of Glen Burnie, Md. The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Md. The funeral home will be open Monday after 1 p.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Jessica Lorine Gonder and Daniel Mattson were married Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Mt. Lena United Methodist Church in Mt. Lena. The bride is the daughter of James and Dorothy Gonder of Funkstown. The bridegroom is the son of Donald and Christina Mattson of Salisbury, Md. The bride is a 2004 graduate of South Hagerstown High School and a 2008 graduate of Salisbury University. She is a park police recruit in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources academy in Sykesville, Md., and at the DNR training facility on Kent Island.

Ravens Roost No. 7 of Hagerstown recently won a trophy. Its entry into the Ravens Roost Parade took third place in the theme division. The parade was May 30 in Ocean City, Md. The van is a 1977 Chevy Sport Van wrapped in a Ravens theme. The van is owned by Tom Moser and Matt Livelsberger. Moser, originally from Hagerstown, lives in Fayetteville, Pa. Livelsberger, who once lived in Smithsburg, now lives in Frederick, Md.

JULY 5, 1921-APRIL 2, 2009 FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - J. Franklin Gayman, 87, of 5860 Fairway Drive, died Thursday, April 2, 2009. Born July 5, 1921, in Thompsontown, Pa., he was a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Gayman and Sadie Irene Hepner Gayman. His wife, Mary Fields Gayman, died Sept. 26, 2004. They were married June 24, 1944. He was a 1938 graduate of Thompsontown High School and graduated in 1942 with a B.S. degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., then in 1948, graduated from Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle.

JAN. 21, 1927-FEB. 23, 2009 MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Betty Lee Williams Johnson, 82, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at City Hospital. Born Jan. 21, 1927, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late James W. Williams and Mary Ellen Everitts Williams Ferro and stepfather, James Ferro. Her husband, Arthur W. Johnson, preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She is survived by one daughter, Susan A. Coleman of North Venice, Fla.; one son, Forrest W. Johnson of Ocean City, Md.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
