Kellogg Co. recently raised some eyebrows when it claimed that its Rice Krispies cereal now "supports your child's immunity. " Because this claim came at a time when the H1N1 flu was running rampant across the country, the move was seen in some circles as a bit opportunistic. In fact, the City of San Francisco sent a letter to Kellogg and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asking for proof of the claim.The proof wasn't provided. Kellogg began adding antioxidants (immunity-supporting vitamins)

CLEAR SPRING -- County and state officials joined about 50 area seniors Tuesday at a ceremony to celebrate the opening of a new site for meals and activities for senior citizens at the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Dept. special events building. The new site, at 12323 Big Spring Road, serves hot lunches and offers daily activities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for anyone 60 and older, said Hannah S. Cramer, deputy director of the Washington County Commission on Aging. The site will also allow the Commission on Aging to extend its Meals on Wheels program to the Clear Spring area, Cramer said.

CPR for health care providers BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Morgan County War Memorial Hospital will offer the American Heart Association's CPR for health care providers course. The class will be from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at War Memorial Hospital. The cost is $40. The course is designed for licensed health care providers who need to obtain or renew their CPR certification. Class size is limited. Registration is required. Sometimes a life-changing decision stems from a small thing. The need to lose weight became clear for Cindy Ryder when she saw her grandsons growing up. "I weighed 242 pounds," said Ryder, 61, a resident of Franklin County, Pa., just a mile and a half from Washington County. "I have seven grandsons. I wanted to keep up with them. " Ryder joined Maryland chapter 77 of TOPS -- Take Off Pounds Sensibly -- in January 2002. TOPS No. 77 meets every Monday morning at First Christian Church in Hagerstown.
