In one sense, the event had the feel of a traditional college fair with college representatives there to help high school students plan for a career. But this was a much broader view of higher education with sessions geared at ways to even get elementary school students on the right track for college. The Future Starts Now: College and Career Planning for K-12 Families also helped parents with tips on how to pay for college education, such as applying for financial help through university trusts, offered high school students advice on what kind of preparation they need to start taking now for various fields and featured various panel discussions.

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra will present "A Night at the Opera" this weekend at The Maryland Theatre. A warning label might be in order: This is not your father's "Night at the Opera. " Yes, selections from some of the most beloved and well-known operas will be performed. These will include "La donna e mobile" from Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto," "Dunque io son" from "The Barber of Seville" by Gioacchino Rossini, "Non so piu cosa son" from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Pres: des remparts de Seville" from "Carmen" by Georges Bizet.

More than $1,000 in cash was stolen Friday night in a robbery at Wooden Keg Liquors at 20219 Jefferson Blvd., according to a Maryland State Police news release. The robbery was called in at 10:08 p.m., according to a Washington County 911 dispatcher. A man entered the store, handed the cashier a note demanding money and fled in the direction of Sun Valley Drive, troopers said. The man is white and about 5 feet 10 inches tall, and was wearing a black hooded jacket and sunglasses, troopers said.

“Float Away With a Good Book” was the theme for Salem Avenue Elementary School's family reading night on Feb. 27. Families enjoyed listening to guest readers, used computers to find helpful websites, were shown educational apps for their home devices, and were treated to ice cream floats. Parents learned strategies to use at home to help their children become successful at reading. Students were given a free book and signed pledges to read 30 minutes a day for the month.

Parents routinely tell their children that nothing good happens after midnight. Local lawmakers perhaps need a similar reminder that the witching hour is a bad time to fire off ill-considered text messages. Del. John Donoghue, D-Washington, let fellow Del. Andrew Serafini have it in a text message sent at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday (copied to a broad list of interested parties), taking issue with Serafini's lobbying efforts as they pertained to downtown Hagerstown redevelopment. South Hagerstown's boys basketball team took care of business Thursday on Senior Night, defeating Smithsburg 72-52 in an MVAL Antietam matchup. South (14-8, 11-3) started the second half nursing a 30-26 lead before exploding for 25 points in the third quarter. Freshman Glen Tensley was the star of the period, scoring all 13 of his points in the quarter. Senior forward Devon King added seven points and three rebounds. “We lost a lot of players, so we have to play young guys like Glen,” said Rebels coach Kevin Naylor.
