Zack Wheeler pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the New York Mets piled up a season-high 17 hits in routing the Washington Nationals 11-3 on Saturday night. Eric Young Jr., Daniel Murphy, Josh Satin and Juan Lagares had three hits apiece for New York, which scored 11 runs for the second time in three days and won its third straight. The news wasn't all good for the injury-riddled Mets, though. First baseman Ike Davis left with a strained muscle on his right side after hitting a sacrifice fly in the third.

Ian Desmond doubled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and the Washington Nationals rallied late after a dominant Matt Harvey departed, overtaking the New York Mets 6-4 Friday night. Harvey struck out 11 and left with a 4-1 lead after seven innings. It was the latest gem for a pitcher who could start the All-Star game on the same Citi Field mound next month. Ryan Zimmerman lined a three-run double with two outs in the eighth that made it 4-all. The Mets used four relievers in the inning, and still couldn't protect the lead.

Neither the trading away of Carlos Beltran nor facing Chien-Ming Wang in his return to the big leagues could slow the suddenly surging New York Mets. Jose Reyes drove in two runs, and the Mets made Wang's first start since 2009 a short one with an 8-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night. Ronny Paulino finished with three hits, and David Wright and Jason Bay each had two as the Mets scored four times in the first inning en route to their fifth straight win. It was New York's major league-leading 33rd road win and the Mets stand 6½ games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL wild-card race.

R.A. Dickey has had a memorable season, including consecutive one-hitters and an All-Star team selection. On Thursday, Dickey broke a streak of rare ineffectiveness this season. After throwing consecutive one-hitters last month, Dickey had won just one of four starts - getting no-decisions in three of them. In his past two, he gave up five runs in each game. He had help from David Wright, who homered twice and had five RBIs and Dickey won his league-leading 13th game and the New York Mets broke a six-game losing streak with a 9-5 win over the Washington Nationals.

Matt Harvey outpitched Stephen Strasburg in a marquee matchup of young aces, escaping a late bases-loaded jam while the crowd chanted his name and leading the New York Mets over the Washington Nationals 7-1 Friday night. Ike Davis and Lucas Duda each hit two home runs, providing an ample cushion for Harvey and the Mets to end their three-game skid. Harvey and Strasburg paired off for the first time in their careers, with many projecting the celebrated 24-year-olds will duel far into the future.

Gio Gonzalez was inches from a no-hitter and the Washington Nationals hit five home runs Monday night, including long balls by their first two batters, in a 9-0 rout of the New York Mets. Gonzalez held the overmatched Mets hitless into the seventh before pinch-hitter Zach Lutz broke up the bid with a soft single for New York's only hit. Lutz swung at the first pitch of the inning and hit a looper that landed on the first base line, taking out a chunk of chalk well behind the bag. First baseman Adam LaRoche made a diving attempt as the ball hit the dirt, but it squirted by and into foul territory along the right field line.

Gio Gonzalez pitched seven shutout innings, Ian Desmond homered off a backup catcher and the Washington Nationals roughed up rookie Zack Wheeler and the New York Mets 13-2 Sunday for a much-needed road-series win. Adam LaRoche homered and Desmond and Denard Span had RBI doubles in a four-run second to spoil Wheeler's home debut, which became such a laugher that catcher Anthony Recker pitched the ninth inning. Jayson Werth also homered against the Mets' touted rookie as Washington finally gave Gonzalez (5-3)

Drew Storen sat in the bullpen and watched the clock. When the phone rang telling him to start warming up, he knew he was staying put with the Washington Nationals. When 4 o'clock came and went, he was left with no doubt whatsoever. When Storen jogged in from the bullpen to pitch the ninth inning, he was greeted with rousing cheers from fans ecstatic that their closer was still on the team, including one who held up a sign that said: “NOT DREW.” The script then had a bit of a wrinkle - Storen gave up a tying home run with two outs in the top of the ninth, but he got credit for the win when the Nationals scored in the bottom of the inning in a 3-2 win Sunday over the New York Mets.
