New Year's Eve revelers will need to be cautious on the drive home after singing "Auld Lang Syne. " Periods of rain are expected Sunday, according to AccuWeather meteorologists. The day should start out sunny, but clouds and showers will move in throughout the day, and New Year's Eve night will be a wet one, an AccuWeather meteorologist said. The high temperature on Sunday is expected to be in the mid-40s. New Year's Day will begin cloudy and rainy, but showers should taper off throughout the day. Monday's high temperature is expected to be in the 50s. Last year, New Year's Eve was mild and dry, and the high temperature was 45 degrees, according to i4weather.

On New Year's Eve 1999, some passed on the noise and crowds of a public celebration, choosing instead to have a quiet time at home with family and a few close friends. Dress was sweaters and denim, not sequins and tuxedos. "We just wanted to be kind of quiet," Amaya Dull said. She, her husband, Dave Dull, and a few friends gathered at the Smithsburg home of Dave Dull's mother, Grace Dull. "I think they took pity on an old widow lady," Grace Dull laughed. "And I'm glad.

On New Year's Eve a "Y2K Central Headquarters" will be set up at Hagerstown's police station, and a Y2K hotline already installed at the police station will be activated, according to city plans. With the year 2000 less than three weeks away, Hagerstown's Mayor and City Council received their final update on the city's preparedness on Tuesday. City Light Department Manager Terry Weaver, who is chairman of the city's Y2K Oversight Committee, said no problems are expected but contingency plans have been developed and extra city staff will work on New Year's Eve. The city's overtime costs for New Year's Eve is estimated at $14,500.
