Darwin and Jessica Horst's fifth child wasn't due to be born until Jan. 13. Yet, Laurel Corinne Horst had her own schedule, arriving at 5:24 a.m. Tuesday at Waynesboro Hospital in Franklin County, Pa. “It was a surprise for us, especially to have it on New Year's,” Laurel's father, Darwin Horst of Chambersburg, Pa., said Tuesday afternoon. Laurel, who weighed 7 pounds, 5.8 ounces and was 18 1/4 inches long, is the fifth child for Horst and his wife, Jessica. “Everything went really well,” Horst said.

A Frederick County man died Sunday from injuries he sustained when he lost control of his motorcycle on New Year's Eve, according to Maryland State Police. Lewis Thomas Legg Jr., 39, of Woodsboro, Md., was taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by helicopter after the 12:36 p.m. accident on U.S. 15 near the Hayward Road intersection, police said. Legg was northbound when he lost control of the motorcycle and slid across both lanes into the median, according to police.

Dean Hamburg had plans with his wife and family for New Year's Eve but said the number of people who drive under the influence around that time would keep him off the road late. “I teach Driver's Ed, and I know there's too many irresponsible people on the road at that time of night,” Hamburg, 44, of Hagerstown, said. “When I would go out in the past, my wife was always the designated driver because she doesn't drink.” On New Year's Day in 2011, there were 122 killed in traffic accidents - 50 percent involved drunken drivers, according to Ragina Avarella of AAA who was citing the most recently available data.

Aaron Brooks, Brian Stuart and Danny Bertoni are members of and train at the Hagerstown Police Athletic Wrestling club. They went undefeated at the Virginia Challenge Holiday Duals in Richmond, Va. On New Year's Eve a "Y2K Central Headquarters" will be set up at Hagerstown's police station, and a Y2K hotline already installed at the police station will be activated, according to city plans. With the year 2000 less than three weeks away, Hagerstown's Mayor and City Council received their final update on the city's preparedness on Tuesday. City Light Department Manager Terry Weaver, who is chairman of the city's Y2K Oversight Committee, said no problems are expected but contingency plans have been developed and extra city staff will work on New Year's Eve. The city's overtime costs for New Year's Eve is estimated at $14,500.

New Year's Eve revelers will need to be cautious on the drive home after singing "Auld Lang Syne. " Periods of rain are expected Sunday, according to AccuWeather meteorologists. The day should start out sunny, but clouds and showers will move in throughout the day, and New Year's Eve night will be a wet one, an AccuWeather meteorologist said. The high temperature on Sunday is expected to be in the mid-40s. New Year's Day will begin cloudy and rainy, but showers should taper off throughout the day. Monday's high temperature is expected to be in the 50s. Last year, New Year's Eve was mild and dry, and the high temperature was 45 degrees, according to i4weather.

If you won't be among the million revelers in Times Square this New Year's Eve, you can still party like it's 2012. And you can do it for a good cause. Unity of Hagerstown will be hosting its first-ever New Year's Eve in Halfway celebration, with proceeds benefiting REACH of Washington County. The event will be held at the Ramada Plaza on Underpass Way and is open to the public. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.; music starts at 9 p.m. The featured entertainment will be Sean Collins and the Backbeats, a five-piece band from Howard and Montgomery counties, Md., that plays Motown, soul, R&B and oldies.

A New Year's Eve bingo event will be held at Western Enterprise Fire Department on Friday. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $50, which includes a meal as well as snacks throughout the evening. You can reserve a ticket and seat by calling Annette at 301-992-6151 before Friday at noon or stop by the fire department between noon and 5 p.m. on the day of the event. The public is invited to attend.
