HAGERSTOWN marlob@herald-mail.com When Master Sgt. Linda Mayes Waring stepped up to the microphone Sunday afternoon as soloist with the U.S. Air Force Concert Band, a cool breeze of pleasure swept over the crowd at Hagerstown Community College's Alumni Amphitheater. Before singing a note, Waring got cheers from her special fan club of about a dozen or so Washington County family and friends. But after belting out two Gershwin tunes, Waring could add several hundred more fans to that club, judging by the applause.

Each summer, Russ and Donna Miller celebrate a marriage of music making with a yearly ritual, touring the country and gigging from a mobile stage they unhitch from their RV and assemble. Only this time, they hope to bring a brand new album with them. The Millers have built a name for themselves as Take Two Variety Band, performing a broad range of family-friendly songs at the places they stop. Donna is the drummer. Russ plays the horns or guitar. They both sing. Recently, the couple caught the attention of Truck Camper Magazine and Lance Camper, which published stories about the couple.

With guitar in hand and a stage under his feet, Darrin Snyder couldn't be more comfortable. That doesn't come as a surprise to those who know him. He was born to be a musician. “My family is deeply rooted in music,” Snyder said. “My father, Cecil, played in bands and my brother, Shawn, won many fiddle contests.” But in comparison, he added, “I'm a late bloomer. Both my dad and brother started playing when they were 13 years of age. I got interested when I was 18 and by 21 I was out playing in the clubs.” Regardless of when the Hagerstown man dipped his toe in the pool of music, what's important, he said, is the fact that he is doing something he loves.
