Mark Knight of the Washington County Sheriff's Department said deputies were called to a home in the 8000 block of Fairplay Farms Road around 2 a.m. Sunday. The deaths were a result of a domestic dispute, he said.

Couple's story turns tragic By ANDREA BROWN-HURLEY / Staff Writer In July, police found the bodies of an elderly Hagerstown couple in a car parked with the engine running in a remote part of Washington County. Fred Stouffer had apparently used exhaust fumes to kill himself and Aileen, his wife of 56 years, who suffered from advanced Alzheimer's disease. Police ruled their deaths a murder-suicide. Those closest to the couple were shocked. Murder-suicides involving older couples are complex tragedies that have a traumatic impact on surviving family members, friends and neighbors, a national geriatric issues expert said.

Conference addresses elderly murder-suicides By ANDREW SCHOTZ / Staff Writer What would prompt an elderly man to kill his suffering wife - then kill himself? Too often, society assumes incorrectly that love spurred him on, a national geriatric issues expert said Friday at a convention on behavioral changes. In reality, desperation, not adoration, usually reigns during cases of elderly murder-suicide, said Donna Cohen, a professor in the Department of Aging and Mental Health at the University of South Florida.

LIBERTYTOWN, Md. - A Frederick County man shot his wife before killing himself Friday at the couple's home in Libertytown, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office reported. Dennis Earl Green, 52, was pronounced dead Friday in the yard of his 9206 Providence Ct. home, police said. Cathy Eileen Green, 41, died Saturday morning at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police said. The Frederick 911 center at 5:41 p.m. Friday received a call reporting a female screaming and shots fired at the Greens' address, police said.

The Martinsburg Police Department said two people died in a possible murder-suicide Saturday. The bodies of Jeffrey Michael Webber, 43, and Kimberly Anne Webber, 40, were found in a bedroom of a Martinsburg residence. Both apparently suffered gunshot wounds to the head, and officers at the scene believe at least one of the wounds was self-inflicted, police said. See Sunday's Herald-Mail for the full story.

Domestic abuse cases alarm Pa. officials By LISA GRAYBEAL Staff Writer, Chambersburg CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Barely a month into the new year, Franklin County, Pa., already has had its share of violent crime. Two of the incidents, a murder-suicide in Quincy, Pa., and an attempted murder-suicide in Waynesboro, Pa., also indicate what some see as a disturbing trend in Franklin and Fulton counties - an ongoing increase in domestic violence-related crime. According to the annual report for 1997 released by Women In Need Victim Services of Chambersburg, domestic violence is on the rise in both counties and more victims are seeking help.

Police confirm murder-suicide By RICHARD F. BELISLE Staff Writer, Waynesboro WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police confirmed Tuesday that the shooting deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were found Monday in a Quincy Township, Pa., home were a murder-suicide. Autopsies on Shannon Shockey, 20, of 8319 Mentzer Gap Road, and Jay Wilbur Stouffer Jr., 30, of 23506 Ringgold Pike, Smithsburg, showed that Stouffer shot Shockey twice then shot himself, police said.
