Last year at this time, Jessica Watters was finishing her senior year at East Carolina University. This year, she'll be on the back of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, participating in the fundraising ride that will help her family pay her medical bills. Watters, a 2004 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia last fall and spent several months in and out of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She had a bone marrow transplant, with marrow from an anonymous donor through the National Marrow Donor Program.

A 20-year-old Hagerstown man was fined Thursday for driving a motorcycle 120 mph in a 50-mph zone while trying to flee a state trooper, Washington County District Court records show. Donald Gerald Beaver III, of 9950 Downsville Pike, was assessed $540.50 in fines and court costs and given six months probation after he pleaded guilty to speeding and attempting to elude police, according to court documents. Maryland State Police trooper D.A. Harper began following Beaver after he saw him riding with the back wheel of his motorcycle in the air as he approached a stoplight Oct. 8, according to charging documents.

SHARPSBURG - A 2005 Boonsboro High School graduate was killed Wednesday morning when his motorcycle struck a Ford Escort on Sharpsburg Pike at Bakersville Road, Maryland State Police said. Ryan Kelly Moore, 19, of 3129 Harpers Ferry Road in Sharpsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene of the reported 8:29 a.m. accident, according to a state police written release. Moore graduated from Boonsboro High School in 2005, assistant principal Jim Moore said. He was "a nice kid, respectful, polite," said Moore, who came to the school the previous fall from a job on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

WILLIAMSPORT- The Humane Society of Washington County will host the fourth annual Bone to Be Wild motorcycle ride Sunday, July 22. Riders from the four-state region and further will take to their bikes to help raise money for the Humane Society of Washington County. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at Harley-Davidson and Buell of Williamsport, 10210 Governor Lane Blvd. Complimentary coffee and donuts will be provided. Bikes will travel approximately 70 miles through southern Washington and Frederick counties.

The man who died Friday night when the motorcycle he was riding on Alternate U.S. 40 crashed head-on with a truck hauling an empty fuel tanker had just picked up the 2007 Yamaha YZ R6 he was operating, according to Maryland State Police in Hagerstown. Tyler Patterson Curry, 22, of 18815 Manor Church Road in Boonsboro, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:29 p.m. accident just west of Cool Hollow Road by a medical examiner, police said. Curry was eastbound on one motorcycle and his brother was on another motorcycle when the victim rode into the westbound lane and was struck head-on by a 2007 Mack tractor, police said.

CASCADE - A Hyattsville, Md., man died Sunday morning when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail on Md. 491 in Cascade, Maryland State Police said in a news release. Jason L. Farley, 29, was riding a 2005 Yamaha R6 with a pack of about nine other motorcycles when the crash happened at about 11:08 a.m., police said. Farley was headed north on Md. 491 at an apparent high rate of speed as he approached a sharp curve at Ritchie Road, police said. Farley struck a guardrail and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

martinsburg@herald-mail.com MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - An Inwood, W.Va., man charged with fleeing from police during a pursuit Tuesday evening was caught after he hit a motorcycle head-on, according to court records. Mark Howard Wright, 23, of 61 Bambi Drive, was charged Wednesday with fleeing in a vehicle causing bodily injury and driving on a license revoked for DUI. Deputy R.L. Steerman Jr. of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department became involved in the pursuit after a Plymouth passed him on Giles Mill Road with an expired inspection sticker, records state.

Motorcycle riders from Maryland and West Virginia gathered at Doub's Woods Park in Hagerstown recently to enjoy a ride sponsored by Women Build of Habitat for Humanity Washington County. The 20 riders raised more than $750 to support the home-building project on Concord Street in Hagerstown. Sen. Donald Munson and Kathleen O'Connell, a Women Build volunteer, judged the motorcycles in several best-of-show categories. Recipients of the awards included Cindy Robinson, Meanest Woman's Bike; Joanne Joyce, Sweetest Woman's Bike; Larry Milihram, Best American Bike; Todd Duke, Best Foreign Bike; and Devon Donovan, Best Overall Bike.
