The fifth annual Goose Route Dance Festival runs Friday through Sunday this weekend and next with dance performances, classes and lectures. Each dance concert features a variety of dance so spectators won't be seeing just one choreographer's work, said Clark, festival founder and artistic director of Goose Route Dance Theatre.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Grandmothers will inspire dancers at the Goose Route Dance Festival, a days-long ode to contemporary dance. The sixth annual Goose Route Dance Festival will take place the weekends of July 14, 15 and 16 and July 21, 22 and 23 in Shepherdstown. The festival features lectures, workshops and performances from eight dance companies. New this year is the "Grandmother Project," choreography based on how people remember their grandmothers. Earlier this month in Shepherdstown, Vincent Thomas, artistic director of the Baltimore-based VTDance company, hosted two community forums about grandmothers.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Goose Route Dance Festival enters its eighth year as a user-friendly showcase of contemporary dance. Eight dance companies from across the country will perform at the War Memorial Building in Shepherdstown. Performances start Friday, with showings from Philadelphia dancer Megan Mazarick, New York-based Guta Hedwig Dance and Morgantown, W.Va.-based AhernDance, Performances will continue through Sunday, July 20. Goose Route Dance Festival is a series of performances, lectures, workshops and classes.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Goose Route Dance Festival organizer Kitty Clark has some advice for newcomers: "If somebody's piece is too weird for you, don't worry about it, there's another performer who will do something different that you might like. Inside, Kitty Clark and Therese Keegan flutter across a hardwood floor, three metal shopping carts littering the otherwise open space. With a smooth, silky motion of waving limbs, Clark and Keegan put themselves through ever-evolving paces. A dance phrase here tacked onto a second there leading into yet another and back again.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Choreographer Ray C. Shaw will unveil his latest work, "I Am," about the beauty of scars, at Goose Route Dance Festival. Goose Route Dance Festival is a celebration of contemporary dance. The festival opens tonight, with a children's class, and will run through Sunday, July 20, at the War Memorial Building in Shepherdstown, with performances by dance companies from across the country. Performances start Friday, July 11. While the festival has wide offerings, tenets of modern dance run deep in the choreography.

The modern dance festival will be held weekends Friday, July 9, through Sunday, July 18, at The Nest Performance Space at War Memorial Building. Activities will include dance performances, family shows and master classes. Festival director Kitty Clark said Goose Route offers something for everyone. "It's a great way to become introduced to contemporary dance because it's a smorgasbord," she said.

The performance by the Equinox Dance Company, originally scheduled for Jan. 25, has been rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m., at HCC's Kepler Theater. Based in Frederick, Md., the company is a contemporary women's dance group for adults that specializes in fusing modern dance with jazz and tap. Members choreograph their own dances and frequently offer free classes and shows for children and adults. The event is free and open to the public.
