The three school alignment options being considered by the Chambersburg Area School Board: 1. Build a middle school in Greenvillage, Pa.; use Faust Junior High School for ninth grade and alternative education programs; continue using Chambersburg Area Senior High School as a high school; send 700 to 1,000 students to the Franklin County (Pa.) Career and Technology Center for their vocational and academic classes. 2. Continuing using Chambersburg Area Middle School as it functions today; convert the career and technology center into a second high school; build a middle school in Greenvillage.

In the years he spent working with elementary school students, Aaron Taylor grew accustomed to seeing tears on the first day of school. But, as the new principal of Waynesboro Area Middle School, Taylor saw those tears and jitters replaced when classes started Monday. The older students had reunions with classmates, questions about schedules, enthusiasm, and an occasional grumble. “For the first day, it was very smooth,” Taylor said. Waynesboro Area School District Superintendent Sherian Diller said she visited every school throughout the day as students started the 2012-13 academic year.

Middle school students are invited to the WyldLife club event Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Friendship Hall on Locust Grove Road between Boonsboro and Rohrersville. WyldLife is a night specifically for middle school students (ages 11 to 14 or grades 6 to 8). The events will include contests, games, competitions and music and time with friends. WASHINGTON COUNTY - Dave Reeder has worked at six Washington County public schools, and he said his new role as director for middle school education will be another way for him to support many of them. Reeder, who began his new job July 1, most recently served as principal of E. Russell Hicks Middle School. He began teaching in Washington County in 1979. According to the school system's budget, Reeder's salary is $101,900. "I don't know that I wanted to leave the schools," Reeder said.

St. Mary Catholic School recently held its spelling bee for grades three, four and five. The winners for each grade were Caroline Dillard (grade three), Donald Borum (grade four) and Madeline Sappenfield (grade five and overall winner). Also on hand for the competition was Vincent Steiner, winner of the middle school spelling contest, who presented gifts to the winners. Coordinator of the event was Jennifer Karn, middle school language arts teacher. Judges were Lois MacCumbee and Deborah Bockrath.

South Martinsburg (W.Va.) Middle School assistant principal Rosa Clark, along with Richard Clark and Corbin Beeghly, release fish into the water feature of the Kelly Butts and Clarence Clark Living Science Lab Memorial outside the school Tuesday morning. The outdoor lab, a community project spearheaded by Ty Strauch, president of the school's Parent Teacher Student Association (standing behind the trio in pink and leopard print), was dedicated in memory of Rosa Clark's husband, a longtime educator who died in 2003, and Beeghly's mother, a former computer aide at the middle school who died in 2007.

August moves Tick, tick, tick and now the clock chimes August. August used to be a hot, long, drawn-out month. Now, August seems to be the fast and furious month. Did you know that the students head back to classes on Wednesday, Aug. 19? Yes, I promise you, it's true. I am still running into people who had no idea school started this early. So my advice to you is to get the ball rolling and grab those school supply lists. You have about two weeks to get the bedtime routine back into place.
