Firefighters were starting to clean up after a barn fire Sunday morning in Metal Township in northwestern Franklin County, Pa., according to Franklin County Emergency Services. No injuries had been reported, a 911 dispatcher said around 12:50 p.m. Sunday. While the fire had not officially been reported out at the scene by 12:48 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were starting to clean up at the scene, the 911 dispatcher said. The barn fire in the 10400 block of Back Road was reported at 9:43 a.m. Sunday, another dispatcher said.

The following incidents were reported on Sunday by Franklin County (Pa.) Emergency Services: At 7:05 p.m., a traffic accident was reported in the 3000 block of Path Valley Road in Metal Township. At 9:15 p.m., a traffic accident was reported in the 700 block of Sollenberger Road in Hamilton Township.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced last week that a high-friction surface treatment will be applied on Pa. 75 in Franklin County this week. The application will be of an epoxy and high-friction bauxite aggregate to portions of the roadway surface, the news release stated. PennDOT piloted the treatment in 2007 in Northampton County. Officials said several years later, skid-resistance tests have been encouraging. Motorists might encounter single-lane traffic restrictions with flaggers assisting them through the work zone Friday in Metal Township.

The trial for a man charged with killing a man with his pickup truck in a Franklin County bar parking lot got under way Tuesday. A jury of six men and six women was selected to hear the case of Dennis Buterbaugh, 42, who is charged in the death of 32-year-old Dale Steven Henry. Buterbaugh of Hustontown, Pa., is accused of hitting Henry with his pickup truck outside a Metal Township, Pa., bar last Memorial Day. Lawyers on both sides gave their opening statements before lunch in Franklin County Court before Judge Richard J. Walsh.

A 48-year-old man died early Christmas morning in a house fire on Path Valley Road in Franklin County, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police and the Franklin County Coroner said. Brian James Glass of 1689 Path Valley Road was pronounced dead on the scene by Franklin County Coroner Jeff Conner, police said. The fire was reported at 3:30 a.m. at 1689 Path Valley Road, Conner said in a news release. An elderly man and woman were able to escape the home during the fire, police said.

Changes to Pennsylvania's legislative districts will slice up Franklin County and divide it among several politicians. On Monday, the state Legislative Reapportionment Commission approved its final maps, which are based on population changes found in 2010 Census data. Redistricting is required every 10 years by the U.S. Constitution. State Rep. Todd Rock, a Republican, said his 90th House District in southern Franklin County gained 9,000 people in the past decade. Because of that, the geographical boundaries of his district will shrink.

Tuesday morning is the scheduled start for the trial of a Fulton County, Pa., man charged with criminal homicide in the Memorial Day 2010 death of a man hit by a vehicle outside a Metal Township, Pa., bar. Gerald T. Buterbaugh, 42, of Hustontown, Pa., is accused of hitting 32-year-old Dale Steven Henry with his pickup truck after an argument May 31, 2010. Henry, of Burnt Cabins, Pa., was flown to Altoona (Pa.) Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced brain dead. According to online court documents, the jury trial has been scheduled for six to seven days before Judge Richard J. Walsh.

Six bridges in Franklin County and five in Fulton County are among about 1,000 in the state that will be subject to lower weight restrictions to slow their deterioration and ensure safety. New sign postings began last week and could take several months, according to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials. Pennsylvania State Police and local officers will enforce the new weight restrictions, PennDOT spokesman Mike Crochunis said last week. The weight restrictions were added to about 1,000 structurally deficient bridges across the state to ensure bridge safety and to preserve the aging bridge system, PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said in a news release last month.

For many, pork and sauerkraut is not only tasty, but a must on New Year's Day. German legend promises that eating pork and sauerkraut on the first day of the year brings good luck all year. But Fayetteville (Pa.) Fire Co. President Mark Bumbaugh thinks it just tastes delicious. "I love it. It's a tradition (on New Year's Day)," Bumbaugh said. Six years ago, the fire company began ringing in the New Year with the traditional meal, which has an unmistakable smell. Proceeds from the all-you-can-eat pork and sauerkraut meal will benefit the fire company, he said.

A Franklin County (Pa.) Court of Common Pleas judge Wednesday sentenced Gerald Buterbaugh to at least 14 years in state prison for hitting and fatally injuring a man with a pickup truck on May 31, 2010. Discarded tissues piled up on the defense table as Buterbaugh, 42, cried throughout the sentencing hearing. He was driving a 1986 Ford that struck 32-year-old Dale Steven Henry outside Hillside Tavern in Metal Township, Pa. Henry, of Burnt Cabins, Pa., was flown to Altoona (Pa.)
