These are challenging times for the Mercersburg Police Department. Residents and businesspeople have filled meeting rooms to air grievances about commercial truck inspections, officers' community involvement and accusations of police tailing drivers without cause. The Mercersburg Borough Council developed a new committee and invited Tuscarora Area Chamber of Commerce involvement to look at the issues. At the helm of the police department are Mercersburg Mayor James C. Zeger and Police Chief John D. Zechman.

Two area ski resorts are reporting strong seasons thanks to cold temperatures and state-of-the-art snow making equipment. Compared to last year, Whitetail Resort in Mercersburg and Liberty Mountain Resort in Fairfield, Pa., are reporting excellent seasons. Don MacAskill, president and general manager at Whitetail Resort, said the resort is up 25 percent in overall visits this year over last. “That's quite significant,” MacAskill said. “Although we haven't had a great deal of natural snow, we have had excellent temperatures for making snow,” MacAskill said.

Mercersburg Academy paid the Gael Center a visit twice this season and its second trip was far different than the first. On Dec. 1, Mercersburg lost to St. Maria Goretti 58-44, but Wednesday was a different story as the Blue Storm turned the tables with a 51-43 victory for the Independent-Parochial Schools League championship. Mercersburg had only four players dent the scoring column, but it was the support head coach Tim Crouch received for star Dre Wills that mattered. Wills scored 15 points and hit only 5 of 16 from the floor, while others stepped up for the Blue Storm (9-14)

Perceived issues with the community police department drew a significant percentage of the Borough of Mercersburg's residents to a town council meeting Monday. More than 30 people packed into council chambers, while dozens more waited in the hallway and on the sidewalk outside Borough Hall. Represented were residents and business people from the one-square-mile municipality that about 1,500 people call home. Jeremy Jones, who lives and works in the borough, described what he called “willful and purposeful, aggressive policing,” which he said includes officers waiting outside establishments with liquor licenses to target their customers for potential driving under the influence arrests.
