The inaugural Flannery's Pub Run Half Marathon held April 13 raised $7,000 each for the Fix JB Sports and G-A Maax capital campaigns. The 13.1-mile race started in Mercersburg and ended in Greencastle, Pa. Pub Run organizers announced the Fix JB Sports donation at the June 10 Tuscarora School Board meeting in Mercersburg.

The Tuscarora School Board's decision to have Mercersburg Elementary School Principal Lura Hanks oversee two elementary schools caused a firestorm after Tuesday's meeting. Starting next year, Hanks will divide her time between Mercersburg and Montgomery elementary schools. That decision came after school board members voted 7-0 to approve the administrative change in order to free up Brett Kagarise, who currently serves as principal at Montgomery and Mountain View elementary schools, to serve full-time at Mountain View.

James Michael “Mike” Hall, 64, of Greencastle, Pa., passed away Friday, June 14, 2013. Born April 22, 1949, in Meadville, Pa., he was a son of the late James Oscar and Alice Euliano Hall. He had been a Franklin County, Pa., resident for 39 years. Mike was a graduate of Churchill Area High School in Pittsburgh and Edinboro (Pa.) University.  He was a social studies teacher and coach in the Greencastle-Antrim School District before embarking on an entrepreneurial career as a sales engineer and owner of Hagerstown Industrial Supply Co. He especially loved American history, politics and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

M. Lorraine Royer, 90, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Thursday, June 13, 2013, at her home. Born Dec. 4, 1922, in Big Spring, Md., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Franklin and Clara Mae Eichelberger Clopper. Early in life, Lorraine was a homemaker. She later worked at the Franklin County Courthouse for more than 20 years as a clerk in the Register and Recorder's Office. She enjoyed gardening and loved her family. She was a member of American Legion Post 222 of Clear Spring and American Legion Post 517 of Mercersburg; and a life member of VFW Post 6241 of Mercersburg.

Mary K. Sipes, 93, formerly of Lemasters, Pa., died Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, Pa., and Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Guitner's Ebenezer United Brethren Church, Greencastle, Pa. The service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Norma Jean Sharar Williams, 79, of Chambersburg, Pa., died Saturday, June 8, 2013, at her home. Service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, Pa., with Pastor Harold E. Yeager officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg. There will be no viewing.

A proposal to rid Mercersburg Elementary School of a full-time principal drew dozens of parents to a Tuscarora School Board meeting held at the school Monday night. At issue is a plan to divide Mercersburg Elementary School Principal Lura Hanks' time between her current school and Montgomery Elementary School. That would free up Brett Kagarise, who currently serves as principal of two schools, Montgomery and  Mountain View Elementary School, to serve full time at Mountain View.

Donald R. Frisby, 79, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Friday, June 7, 2013, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa. There will be no viewing. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Zion Union Cemetery, Mercersburg. Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg.

Joy Juanita Ballard, 60, a resident of Winchester, Kan., died June 1, 2013, in Hutchinson, Kan. She was born Nov. 24, 1952, in Gettysburg, Pa., and was the daughter of Chester Linden Ballard and Mildred Marie Naugle Ballard. She was a graduate of James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, Pa., and had an elementary education degree from Sterling College. She was a Vietnam War veteran with the U. S. Navy. She was a member of Topeka Bible Church and Hutchinson Lions Club.
