Eugene E. "Joe" Bowers, 70, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Tuesday, April 9, 2013. The viewing will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. The service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Welsh Run Church of the Brethren Cemetery near Mercersburg.

Pa. man faces assault charges, police say MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A Mercersburg man has been charged with aggravated assault and simple assault after allegedly throwing something at a female victim Monday. Mercersburg police allege Norman James Donnelly, 49, of 43 E. California St., also hit the victim in his home. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 16, police said in a news release.

Tuesday, April 9, 2013 BOYS LACROSSE St. Maria Goretti, in its second year as a varsity program, pulled off an upset on Tuesday afternoon, beating Mercersburg Academy for the first time, 8-3 on the turf at Northern Middle School. Mike Ewing had three goals and a pair of assists to lead the Gaels (8-2). Wyatt Derr had two goals, Matt Casto had a goal and two assists, Graham Horst and Will Snyder each had a goal, Morgan Kenworthy had an assist and Mike Fairley had nine saves for Goretti.

Richard E. Hopkins, 82, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Friday, April 5, 2013, at Lifecare Hospital, Mechanicsburg, Pa. There will be no viewing; however the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Friday at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Lay officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters, Pa.

Marvin Curtis Meyers, 87, of Greencastle, Pa., died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital. There will not be visitation at the funeral home. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church, Mercersburg, Pa. The service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the church yard. Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

A resident of Main Street in Mercersburg has announced his candidacy to become the town's next mayor. Jeremy Jones, a Republican, is the chief operating officer for Flannery's Restaurant Group. In this capacity, he serves as general manager and executive chef for the local business. Jones also owns Jc Jones and Company, which is a private management and culinary consultation business, according to a news release. Jones serves as a volunteer coordinator and speaker for JIL Ministries International of Biglerville, Pa. He has been appointed by the Mercersburg Borough Council and the Tuscarora Area Chamber of Commerce's board of directors to serve on the “police/safety committee” of the borough.

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 PREP BASEBALL Clear Spring 8, Catoctin 5 CLEAR SPRING - Dylan Stouffer hit a base-clearing double in the sixth inning to put Clear Spring ahead and key an eight-run sixth inning to lead the Blazers to a season-opening victory. Catoctin scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the lead, while starting pitcher Alex Kennedy struck out 10 in his four innings. Logan Appel put Clear Spring on the board in the sixth to start the rally as the Blazers sent 13 hitters to the plate.

Flannery's Pub Run 1/2 Marathon is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13. The course begins in Mercersburg and winds through back roads to Greencastle, Pa. Organizers have announced several age group awards: All participants that finish will receive a finisher's medal and a shirt. Age groups are 19 and younger; 20 to 24; 25 to 29; 30 to 34; 35 to 39; 40 to 44; 45 to 49; 50 to 54, 55 to 59; 60 to 64; 65 to 69; and 70 and older. Top three overall male and female runners prizes will be, first place, $100 second place, — $75; and third place, $50. A Runner's Dinner is set for Friday April 12, at The John Allison Public House in Greencastle.
