August 8, 2013
Richard E. "Dick" McFadden, 68, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013. There will be no viewing. However, the family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 7 pm. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. A celebration of his life will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with Tike and Cindy Shriver officiating.

On Aug. 3, 2013, surrounded by family, Tania Kelley, 87, passed away in her Mercersburg, Pa., home. Her husband, Charles J. Kelley Sr., predeceased her in 1997, just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Tania was born Jan. 9, 1926, in the Ukraine. At the age of 16, her strength, pride and strong faith were tested when she was forcibly taken from her home to Germany. There, she eventually met Charles, a World War II American soldier. After marrying, they moved to the U.S., where they raised their family in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Fire crews were called to a barn fire Monday night in the 4700 block of Fort Loudon Road north of Mercersburg, according to a Franklin County Emergency Services dispatcher. The dispatcher could not confirm the exact location of the fire, which was reported about 9:37 p.m. The blaze sounded like it was “fully involved,” the dispatcher said, although he could not confirm that information. Two Washington County tanker units - one each from Maugansville and Clear Spring - were dispatched to assist, a Washington County Emergency Services supervisor said.

Almira M. “Sally” Lauver, 91, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Saturday, July 27, 2013. There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Thursday at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. A memorial service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Private burial at Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg, will be held at the convenience of the family.

Viewing will be Tuesday one hour prior to the service at Guitner's Ebenezer United Brethren Church, Greencastle, Pa. Robert “Paul” Sipes Sr., 94, formerly of Lemasters, Pa., died Monday July 8, 2013. The viewing will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, Pa., and Friday one hour prior to the service at Guitner's Ebenezer United Brethren Church, Greencastle, Pa. The service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident in which a vehicle struck and damaged a concrete retaining wall near the intersection of Fort Loudon Road and South Main Street, according to a news release from the Mercersburg Police Department. Chief John D. Zechman said in the release that the incident happened between Friday, June 28, and Tuesday, July 2. Zechman said a truck or a piece of farming equipment traveling north on Fort Loudon Road scraped the retaining wall for approximately 75 feet before turning right onto South Main Street.

Lura Hanks has resigned as principal of Mercersburg Elementary School, citing “professional incompatibility” as the reason for leaving the job she held since 2010. A week ago, the Tuscarora School Board decided to split Hanks' time between two elementary schools. “Due to recent executive decisions and situations, it was time for me to make a change,” Hanks said in a telephone interview Thursday. On June 18, the board unanimously decided to approve an administrative change that would divide Hanks' time between Mercersburg and Montgomery elementary schools.
