Five students from Hagerstown who attend Mercersburg Academy were named AP Scholars by the College Board's Advanced Placement Program. The students include: Daniel Roza was named a National AP Scholar. Mackenzie Riford was named an AP Scholar with Distinction David Roza was named an AP Scholar with Distinction. Chuck Mellott was named an AP Scholar with Honor. Christian Binford was named an AP Scholar.

Sunday, January 22, 2012 GIRLS BASKETBALL Lawrenceville 52, Mercersburg Academy 25 MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Lawrenceville sprinted to a 21-1 lead through one period on the way to an easy win over Mercersburg Academy. Hanna Warfield had nine points and five rebounds and Sarah Firestone had seven points and five rebounds for the Blue Storm (5-8). BOYS BASKETBALL Lawrenceville 44, Mercersburg Academy 29 MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Mike Collins had 12 points for Mercersburg Academy in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League loss to Lawrenceville.

Thursday, January 19, 2012 GIRLS BASKETBALL McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Macey Hollenshead found Courtney Strait for the game-winning basket with 3.3 seconds left as Southern Fulton edged McConnellsburg 31-30 in the Sideling Hill League on Thursday. Hollenshead had 11 points for the Indians (13-1, 6-0). Nikki Fleming had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for McConnellsburg (6-8, 2-6), while Becca Hahn had seven points and 12 rebounds and Libby Strayer added five steals for the Spartans.

Saturday, January 14, 2012 BOYS BASKETBALL LEONARDTOWN, Md. - Obi Enechionyia recorded his third straight triple-double with 15 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks to lift Saint James to a 72-57 victory over St. Mary's Ryken on Saturday afternoon. Enechionyia was one of five players in double figures for the Saints (7-5). Tayana Stewart had 23 points, including three 3-pointers, Chelsea Scott had a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists, Alexis Shaffer had 11 points and Alexis Small had six points and 16 rebounds for the Rebels (8-5, 5-2). Retired Commander USN, Jay H. Wilkinson, 70, of 6 Grouse Wing Court, Biltmore Lake, N.C., entered into rest at 12:02 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center in Asheville, N.C., following a short illness. He was born Nov. 23, 1941, in Waynesboro, Pa. He was the son of the late John S. Wilkinson, who was raised in Fayetteville, Pa., and Elinor (Perreida) Wilkinson, who was raised in Hawaii. He lived his early life in Waynesboro. Mr. Wilkinson graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1959 and received a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1963.

Saturday, December 17, 2011 PREP INDOOR TRACK The Boonsboro girls finished second at the HCC Invitational on Saturday at Hagerstown Community College. Liberty won with 78.5 points, Boonsboro was the runner-up with 54 and Frederick was third with 36 in the field of roughly 20 teams. The Warriors were led by Sarah Zielinski, Abby Duncan and Maggie Sullivan. Zielinski won the 3,200 (11:50.75) and placed third in the 1,600 (5:35.85), Duncan won the 55 (7.47)
OBITUARIES

Calvin E. Bricker Sr., 85, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at Chambersburg Hospital, with his family by his side, after a lengthy illness. Born May 7, 1926, and raised in Claylick, Pa., he was a son of the late Ellis and Cora Carbaugh Bricker. Calvin attended Claylick School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Most of his life was spent as a self-employed electrician. He also worked for Cumberland Valley Power Co. and Mercersburg Academy.
