Saturday, October 27, 2012 PREP VOLLEYBALL Peyton Wallech had 11 kills and 14 digs, and Christine Randall added 11 kills and six digs as the Hubs swept the Blazers 25-19, 25-23, 25-11 in an MVAL Antietam battle Saturday. North (12-1, 6-0) clinched the Antietam title with the victory. Zoe Schreiber had eight kills and four blocks, Sarah Bentley had 32 assists and Alexis McCarthy added 14 digs for the Hubs. Clear Spring fell to 6-8, 2-5. GIRLS SOCCER South Hagerstown 2, Northwood 1 SILVER SPRING, Md. - South Hagerstown defeated Northwood in double overtime Friday in a Maryland Class 3A West first-round game.

Shelby Griffith had 19 assists and 18 digs, Shelby Wallace had 17 assists and nine digs, Rakel Wilson had eight digs, Maggie Sullivan had eight kills and a block, Sarah Anderson and Leighann Cowden had six kills each and Natalie Reeder had 14 digs for the Warriors (7-5)

Saturday, October 20, 2012 PREP VOLLEYBALL CRESAPTOWN, Md. - Heritage Academy swept Shalom Christian and Calvary Christian in the semifinals and final of the Mason Dixon Christian Conference tournament Saturday to win the championship for the third straight year. The Eagles (18-0) have won 55 straight best-of-5 matches - 51 of them in the MDCC over the last three years. Heritage swept Shalom 25-16, 25-20, 25-15 in the semis and Calvary 25-11, 29-27, 25-19 in the final.

Saturday, October 6, 2012 PREP CROSS COUNTRY FREDERICK, Md. - St. Maria Goretti senior Luke Daigneault won the individual title and led the Goretti boys to a successful defense of their team title at the Independent Parochial School League Championships at Ballenger Creek Park on Saturday.  Daigneault, who covered the 3.2-mile layout in 17:28, was joined on the All-League team by teammates Patrick Jones (18:15) and Kevin Proctor (18:22) who finished third and fourth.

The Panther defense wanted to make Sidwell Friends throw the ball on Saturday. The Quakers did ... and very successfully. Saturday, September 22, 2012 PREP CROSS COUNTRY PARKTON, Md. - Sarah Zielinski won the small-school girls race at the Bull Run Invitational at Hereford High School on Saturday, leading Boonsboro to a second-place finish in the field of 28 teams. Zielinski covered the hilly 3-mile course in 20:06, finishing 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Claire Beautz of Poolesville. The Warriors also got top-30 finishes from Kortney Cunningham (20th, 22:16), Ella Hawkins (21st, 22:20)

Mr. John L. "Jay" Quinn, 79, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Saturday afternoon Sept. 15, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family. Born Nov. 24, 1932, in Boston, Mass., he was a son of the late John L. and Beatrice Lanen Quinn. Mr. Quinn was a 1950 graduate of Monsignor Coyle High School, Taunton, Mass. He graduated from Boston University and engaged in graduate studies there as well as at Harvard University. He joined the science faculty at Mercersburg Academy in 1961 as a chemistry teacher and served in that capacity until 1989.
