HALFWAY -- Some bowling balls crawled toward the pins. Others whizzed down the lanes as if they were in a race. And a few never hit their targets, instead landing in the gutters. But no matter when or if the balls hit the pins, the bowlers still achieved their goal -- raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). MDA has long been a national charity of the National Association of Letter Carriers, but this was the first nationwide bowlathon the union held for MDA, said Ronda Sisk, president of Hagerstown branch 443. It was also the first time, that Sisk knew of, that the Hagerstown branch held a fundraiser for MDA. About 70 bowlers attended the Deliver the Cure Bowl at Southside Bowl off Virginia Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

ANNAPOLIS - Agriculture is entering the age of computers and geo-spatial imaging, seeking better yields, lower costs and environmental enhancement. Whether Maryland farm operators will gain by costly investment in these new technologies is the subject being explored Sept. 21 at the Precision Agriculture Forum, sponsored by the Nutrient Management Program of the Maryland Department of Agriculture. "The volume of information and rate of technological change in agriculture today presents many opportunities and often confusion for farmers," said Agriculture Secretary Lewis R. Riley.

ANNAPOLIS - Maryland farmers who have purchased federal crop insurance are reminded that crop damage from flooded fields from this past week's record-breaking rain are covered as it would be in the case of drought, the Maryland Department of Agriculture said. In a news release, the department gave tips "for getting the most out of your crop insurance in the coming weeks. " The tips are: Call your crop insurance agent and report what fields are flooded within 72 hours of discovery of loss or damage If you plan on plowing down the crop, have an adjustor evaluate the field before plowing.

With a brilliant sun gleaming off the chrome of their Sportsters, Fat Boys and Electraglides, 574 registered riders - many outfitted in the black leather chic of Harley-Davidson - roared out of M&S Harley-Davidson in Chambersburg to rendezvous in Greencastle for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

ANNAPOLIS -The Maryland Department of Agriculture announced a new grant program to fund projects that enhance the competitiveness of specialty crop growers. MDA will distribute funds totaling $500,623 for the development of projects that will benefit Maryland's existing specialty crop producers. Grants will be issued from $25,000 to $200,000 per project in Maryland. Specialty crops include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, Christmas trees. horticulture and nursery crops.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - They might have oil in their blood, tattoos on their arms and wind in their hair, but these "angels" ride for a cause. Riders from around the area gathered Saturday on Harleys and Hondas to raise money for the 18th annual Motorcyclist Ride for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Michele Ollason, program coordinator of the MDA, estimated that more than 500 riders registered at M&S Harley-Davidson for the 120-mile ride. Darren Moats, son of M&S Harley-Davidson owner Dennis Moats, was impressed by the turnout.

ANNAPOLIS - Farmers who plant cover crops this fall to help reduce soil erosion and protect water quality in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries may apply for cost-share grants. Up to $50 an acre is available through the Maryland Department of Agriculture's 2007-2008 Winter Cover Crop Program, the MDA said in a news release. Sign up for the statewide program runs from June 4 through June 29 at local soil conservation district offices. "We are committed to keeping agriculture profitable and providing farmers with the resources they need to protect the Chesapeake Bay for future generations," said Gov. Martin O'Malley.

ANNAPOLIS - A meeting of the Governor's Intergovernmental Commission for Agriculture will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Maryland Department of Agriculture headquarters, Lower Level Conference Room, 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway in Annapolis. The agenda will include an update on 2010 Farmers Markets legislation, existing food safety regulations, implementation of the Maryland Winery Modernization Act and information on wildlife management programs. The Governor's Intergovernmental Commission for Agriculture was established in 2006 to "promote the economic profitability of agriculture in the state by ensuring that all appropriate state agencies work in a cooperative, coordinated manner with local government and industry groups in planning, implementing, overseeing and evaluating intergovernmental initiatives related to agricultural affairs of the state.
