McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A McConnellsburg man was killed Sunday morning after losing control of his vehicle, which went airborne before striking a tree on Pa. 1011 just north of Boy Scout Road in Dublin Township, Pennsylvania State Police said. Timothy Dale Brown, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene by Fulton County Coroner Denny Butterbaugh. Brown was not wearing a seatbelt, police said. There were no passengers. Brown was travelling south at a high rate of speed at 4:05 a.m. when he lost control on a slight left-hand curve.

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -- U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster toured JLG Industries Tuesday to glimpse the new armored vehicles being produced for American soldiers in Afghanistan. Oshkosh Corp., the Wisconsin-based parent company of JLG, has contracted with the U.S. Army to build 3,944 mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicles, or MRAP-ATVs, by February. The $2 billion in contracts brought the congressman to McConnellsburg to tour the facility, he said. A member of the House Armed Services Committee, Shuster is actively involved in reviewing U.S. military strategy against insurgents.

Staff Correspondent McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - When lightning struck the McConnellsburg softball team Monday in its game with cross-county rival Southern Fulton, Spartans coach Craig Elbin knew it was more than just a bad omen. Because this lightning was of the "two-out" variety. Southern Fulton's Bethany Mellott blasted a two-out grand slam to left-center in the fifth inning to break open a tight game as the Indians came away with a 12-3 win. The six-run outburst finally put some breathing room between the Indians and their upstart rivals.

Ryan Defibaugh had nine points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Russel Glazier had 12 points and five assists for the Spartans (12-6). GIRLS BASKETBALL Northern Bedford 43, Southern Fulton 38 LOYSBURG, Pa. - Brooke Whiteside had 17 points and four steals for Southern Fulton, but the Indians lost to Northern Bedford in the Sideling Hill League.

- BOYS BASKETBALL LOYSBURG, Pa. - Drew Washabaugh hit a 10-foot jumper with four seconds left in the game to lift McConnellsburg into the Class A District 5 finals with a 56-55 victory over Turkeyfoot Valley at Northern Bedford High School on Monday. The Spartans (19-7) will play Conemaugh Township in the championship game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Regardless of the outcome, McConnellsburg qualifies for the state tournament. McConnellsburg trailed by one with 25 seconds remaining.
