With the number of World War II veterans dying at the rate of more than 600 per day, it was a rare occasion to have two veterans of the conflict together in Chambersburg on Thursday. World War II veteran and best-selling author of “Hell's Guest,” Col. Glenn Frazier, 89, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club meeting at The Orchards Restaurant. He shared his experiences of fighting a losing effort to save the Philippine Island of Luzon from the Japanese to the infamous six-day Bataan Death March and three years of torture in Japanese prisoner of war camps.

Pennsylvania State Police in Fulton County were seeking a man in connection with the Tuesday robbery of the F&M Trust Bank branch at the Penn's Village Shopping Center. An arrest warrant was issued for Aaron Lee Deneen, 27, of 380 Lions Park Drive, McConnellsburg, police said. Deneen had not been taken into custody as of Tuesday night, police said. Anyone who sees Deneen is advised to use caution and call state police at 717-484-3131. Police said a man identified as Deneen entered the bank at 2:39 p.m. and gave a handwritten note to one of the tellers that read “give me what you have and you will not get hurt,” police said.

A McConnellsburg, Pa., woman was charged with cutting a man on the arm with a knife, Pennsylvania State Police said. Ella Bernice Spriggs, of 328 Heritage Drive, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering and harassment, according to a state police news release. Troopers said the incident was reported at 8:26 a.m. Friday in Todd Township, Pa., where the man was cut during an argument, state police said. Spriggs was released Friday from the Franklin County Prison after posting a $10,000 bond, a records employee said.

PREP VOLLEYBALL McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -- Hannah Young had five aces, 36 digs and 50 kills to lead Broadfording Christian Academy to its second McConnellsburg tournament championship. Broadfording finished second in pool play, losing to Greencastle, but defeated Fannett-Metal, Shippensburg and Milton Hershey to advance. In the semifinals, Broadfording beat James Buchanan 27-25, 25-12 before gaining revenge with a 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 win over Greencastle in the finals.

McConnellsburg woman dies in accident McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A McConnellsburg woman died following a two-vehicle accident Sunday in Todd Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police in Fulton County. The police report said Louise G. Gordon, 73, was not wearing a seat belt in the 4:03 p.m. accident at U.S. 30 and Old U.S. 30. She was thrown from the 1991 Buick Century that she was driving westbound on U.S. 30. Police said Gordon tried to make a left turn onto Old U.S. 30 and pulled into the path of an eastbound 1992 Cadillac driven by Edward Knoft, 59, of Apopka, Fla. Gordon's car was hit on the driver's side.

Emily Watkins had 19 kills, Lisa DeShong had 50 assists and 18 digs, and Valerie Green had 16 digs for the Spartans. McConnellsburg will play North Star tonight at 6 at Shanksville. MEN'S SOCCER Two Hawks on Region XX team Hagerstown Community College players Brian Kukucka and Alex Manea were named to the 2009 All-Region XX team.

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - After the Cumberland Valley Christian boys basketball team defeated McConnellsburg 50-44 at CVCS on Dec. 18, most people expected the rematch at McConnellsburg to be close on Monday. The Spartans had other ideas. Hunter Homistek nailed four first-half 3-pointers, McConnellsburg made nine 3s overall and the Blazers were ice cold on offense as the Spartans raced to a 30-13 halftime lead and cruised to a 59-36 victory. Homistek made two 3s in the final minutes of the first quarter, and hit his other two in the early stages of the second quarter as McConnellsburg (9-4)

GIRLS BASKETBALL SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Megan Gephart scored 17 points as Shippensburg won in double overtime 57-47 over McConnellsburg in the Lady Greyhound Holiday Tournament on Monday. MConnellsburg (1-5) came back from an 11-point third quarter deficit to force the overtime, led by 20 points from Jamie Morton and 15 from Kim Johnston. Stenger, a Republican, won the mayoral race Tuesday with 164 votes to Peggy Sue Bailey's 44. Incumbent Rudy Mihilick was defeated in the May primary. The late Max Stenger had served as mayor of McConnellsburg for 42 years and was recognized as one of the oldest mayors in Pennsylvania. James H. Stenger, 61, owns The Toyer's Shop, a machine shop and engine manufacturing business in McConnellsburg.
