Saturday morning's rain dampened some Martinsburg Heritage Day events, but it had little effect on the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the “for the kids, by George” children's museum at the Caperton Train Station in Martinsburg. The museum, designed by Lisa Dall'Olio of Grove & Dall'Olio Architects of Martinsburg, is a fun and engaging hands-on “total immersion” experience. Children can touch and play with the exhibits, which are designed to teach the history of the region from the time before the Europeans arrived through the middle of the 20th century, including the region's railroad history.

Martinsburg voters will cast ballots Saturday to decide whether to renew the city's police levy, which provides funds for the police department. Polls in the City of Martinsburg open at 6:30 a.m. Saturday and close at 7:30 p.m. In order to be renewed, the excess levy question has to be approved by at least 60 percent of voters. If the levy is not renewed, it will expire June 30, 2014. Martinsburg Police Chief Kevin Miller, in an email sent Friday, described the ramifications if voters do not renew the levy.
