Martinsburg voters will cast ballots Saturday to decide whether to renew the city's police levy, which provides funds for the police department. Polls in the City of Martinsburg open at 6:30 a.m. Saturday and close at 7:30 p.m. In order to be renewed, the excess levy question has to be approved by at least 60 percent of voters. If the levy is not renewed, it will expire June 30, 2014. Martinsburg Police Chief Kevin Miller, in an email sent Friday, described the ramifications if voters do not renew the levy.

A reported stabbing early Friday led Martinsburg police to a West Race Street apartment where they found 113 grams of crack cocaine and about $11,300, the police department announced. The investigation ultimately led to the discovery of a stolen AK-47 semi-automatic rifle and a stolen shotgun, and ammunition found in the storage unit in Berkeley County, police said. The name of a man who was treated at City Hospital in Martinsburg for a knife wound on his neck was not released by police, pending further investigation.

The driver of the pickup that fatally struck a trash collection truck worker on Dominion Road near Gerrardstown, W.Va., on March 7 has died, police said this week. Stephen J. Vigh Jr., 75, of Gerrardstown, passed away at his residence on May 1, according to his obituary. The trash collection worker, Jeremy L. Tabler, 30, died at City Hospital in Martinsburg after he was struck by the F-250 truck that Vigh was driving. State Police Trooper W.M. Roden, who investigated the crash, said Vigh was cleared of any wrongdoing in the accident.

A Martinsburg man was apprehended Saturday morning following an eight-hour standoff with police, according to a Martinsburg Police Department news release. Terry Lee Mason, 25, of 116 Wilt Drive, is charged with wanton endangerment and felon in possession of a firearm through Berkeley County Magistrate Court, according to the release. The incident began Saturday at about 1:30 a.m., when the Martinsburg Police Department responded to The Dirty Dawg Saloon at 1017 S. Queen St. in Martinsburg for a report of shots fired.

Stephen J. Vigh Jr., 75, of Gerrardstown, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at his residence. Born Nov. 25, 1937, in Hatboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Stephen J. Vigh Sr. and Addie Roberts Vigh. He retired from Mack Trucks and was a part-time farmer. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Romig Vigh; children, Stephen James Vigh III, Regina A. Nischan and Gerald C. Vigh; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Short.
