Lillian Virginia Evans, 89, died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Homewood of Williamsport in Williamsport, Md. Born Aug. 14, 1923, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Arlie B. Hutzler and Lillian Nesmith Hutzler. She was a 1942 graduate of Martinsburg High School. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she served on the altar guild. She was a member of the Gateway Garden Club and the Junior Civic League. Ginny was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.

Hedgesville High School teacher and coach Ronald Renner no longer will keep a watchful eye over students serving in-school suspension. Title I teacher Roxanna McClung's laughter no longer will resonate through the hallways of Rosemont Elementary, infecting fellow staff members and students with a good mood.

Berkeley L. Thomas, 75 DEC. 24, 1932-NOV. 16, 2008 FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Berkeley L. Thomas, 75, of Falling Waters, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, at his home. Born Dec. 24, 1932, in Darkesville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Norman E. Thomas and Margaret Lewis Thomas Carper. He was a member of the Martinsburg High School class of 1950. He was employed with Peoples Life Insurance Co. in 1956 and was promoted to regional manager in 1982. The Martinsburg office was named after him in 1984.

Frances V. Sopko, 84 JAN. 3, 1925-FEB. 20, 2009 MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Frances Virginia Sopko, 84, of Elmcroft and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009. Born Jan. 3, 1925, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter J. Lewis and Nellie Virginia Grimes Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Peter Sopko, in 1983. She was a 1943 graduate of Martinsburg High School. She graduated from Shepherd College and later furthered her education through the University of Maryland and Shippensburg University with a master's equivalency in Elementary Education.

charlestown@herald-mail.com "Live wire" and "innovator" were terms used Monday to describe Richard Harvey Hart, a Martinsburg native who became known for his unique teaching style at Williamsport High School. Hart, 54, died July 20 at Morgantown (W.Va.) Public Library, where he worked for 10 years. At Williamsport High School, Hart started a daily student newspaper and a daily radio program in which students gave news broadcasts over the school's public address system, friends said.

JULY 4, 1927-MARCH 26, 2011 Richard F. “Dick” Brown, 83, of Martinsburg, W.Va., passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011, in his home, under hospice care. Born on July 4, 1927, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Elmer E. and Margaret Priscilla (Miller) Brown.  He graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1945 and remained active in helping to organize reunions.  He was a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS McKean in the South Pacific.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Jacki Truman was crowned Miss Berkeley County and Tiffany Lawrence was crowned Miss Potomac Highlands Saturday night at Apollo Civic Theatre. Truman, 19, of Falling Waters, W.Va., is a student at Shepherd College. She is the daughter of Kim and Gary Pearson. Lawrence, 20, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., is a junior at Shepherd College. She is the daughter of Tony and Cheryl Lawrence. Truman received her crown from Devon Dickson, Miss Berkeley County 2002.
