The St. Maria Goretti Gaels have recovered from a three-game losing streak by winning their last two. Goretti defeated the St. James Saints 52-34 on Saturday afternoon at the Gael Center. "Right now, we're playing pretty decent ball," Gaels coach Todd Rideout said. "All five of our next opponents are in the Herald-Mail top 10 poll. Right now, we are trying to play within our strengths. " Senior forward Katie Chambers had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for Goretti (14-7)

The St. Maria Goretti boys basketball team finished with a perfect league record by defeating St. John's Catholic Prep 70-52 on Friday night in an Independent Parochial School League game at the Gael Center. The Gaels (17-10, 4-0) will host Saint James at 7 p.m. Monday in the first IPSL championship game. “I think defensively, in the second half, we were able to come out with a lot of intensity,” Goretti coach Amrit Rayfield said. “We also had a great effort with rebounding the basketball.

Gaels girls cut down turnovers, march past Saints By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent ST. JAMES - The St. Maria Goretti girls basketball team knew that it had to do something about its 30 turnovers per game average. On Thursday, the Gaels took a step in the right direction. The better ball control held the Gaels to a season-low 21 miscues, good enough to score a 54-27 win over St. James. "We have been making a real big effort to cut our number of turnovers in half," said Goretti center Lauren Costello, who finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
