It was the fifth win in a row for the Gaels (12-8). "We didn't play our best baseball, but we found a way to win," Goretti coach John Bowen said. "That's the sign of a good team. We started to see the ball better later in the game. We were hitting the ball harder and we were finding the holes. " Aaron Wilkinson started a one-out rally in the sixth for the Gaels with a single to right and went to second when Connor Grimsley reached on an outfield error.

When Martin Geben steps onto the basketball floor, the fans will not see any razzle and dazzle. What one will see, however, is a young man who brings a lunch pail - also known as workmanlike effort - to the gym. Geben, a 6-foot-9 junior who hails from Vilnius, Lithuania, is the prize catch of St. Maria Goretti and, sometime soon, will be the same for a fortunate NCAA Division I college. Geben was instrumental in leading Goretti to a 21-13 record this season, the first time since 2004-05 that the Gaels exceeded 20 wins in a season.

Valuable life lessons never seem particularly valuable at the time. More likely, they are the source of pain, heartbreak and discouragement. Yet something deep inside some people causes them to regroup and carry on, despite the difficulty or the odds. At the annual True Grit Awards banquet, Mike Spinnler recounted some his own struggles before stating this simple but difficult truth: “When you get your teeth kicked in, you have to get back up.” It is the message behind the True Grit awards, which honor student-athletes who have overcome sometimes multiple setbacks.

The NCAA currently is in a recruiting period which allows coaches face-to-face visits at school locations with prospective players. Goretti has become a stop on the road. Travis Leopold's primary role on Smithsburg's lacrosse team isn't exactly a glamorous one. His job is to face off and get off the field - FOGO, in lacrosse prose. He expanded on his FOGO duties Monday night, leading the Leopards with four goals en route to an 8-3 victory over St. Maria Goretti. “(Leopold) was our FOGO, but he showed something tonight,” said Smithsburg coach Joe Dietrich. “He used his speed and lit it up.” Leopold scored 2:30 into the game on an assist from Kyle Geblein after Smithsburg goalie Zach Schaeffer made a save and successfully cleared it downfield.

Williamsport baseball coach David Warrenfeltz would like to bottle up the end results of Saturday's annual Larry Wadel Classic and use them for the rest of the season. In winning two games - 10-0 over St. Maria Goretti and 12-0 over Keyser - the Wildcats' pitching staff produced 10 innings of scoreless work, allowed only six hits, and even better yet, allowed no walks. “We definitely played good baseball today,” Warrenfeltz said. “It all starts with pitching, and when you throw in the zone, it also makes for better defense.” In the first of four games in the classic, Williamsport (3-2)
